Amber gearbox light came on in my 2004 S type Jaguar. After shutting engine down and cooling it started with no light on. So, I limped home. The Q: Now that the light is no longer lit can I drive it? Or, just take it to the shop for repair?

You need to have the car scanned for freeze frame data code reading to see what happened at the time of the limp mode...Let me say that at times after heavy rain or even if you wet the fire wall near the throttle body, that can also cause the limp mode coupled with brake, dcs,and gear box fault and engine fault lights etc...You can actually do a hard reset yourself by disconnecting the neg battery terminal for 30 min..Let the car run and take it for a drive to make sure the shift points arent jerky. But have the car scanned and let me know what code comes up.

Hi i have a 2009 diesel x type jaguar when first starting car i have gearbox fault and car goes into limp mode but after 10 minutes driving when you switch off and restart car everything is fine

When the limp home is engaged by the processor a fault code or codes is set in memory, it may be a Transmission code or engine fault code. You nee it tested with a full function scanner, a code reader will not read the transmission faults.

If it's something electrical you can try to reset the computer in in and see if that works. I do this by disconnecting the battery for about an hour and my cars are reset. Good Luck.

Gearbox fault light and cruise not available

The only thing that will cause a cruise control fault is a loose vacuum hose ussually on the breather hose coming from the valve cover in front to the throttle body. As for the remainder, shut off the car and restart to get you home and avoid the limp home mode. That in itself is an electronic fault in the ground system. Check you coils or replace them with a new set of plugs (autolite double platinum recommendes.) Clean any grounds you may have and then start you engine. You will notice there is no problem then. Run a diagnostic tool to see if there is any fault with grounded sensors like the O2 to keep that from happening again. Don't get the tranny replaced cause thats all the dealership wants to do and charge you $5k. Its not the actual cause. Good luck and let us know if there is anything else we can do here at fixya.

You need to take to Jaguar technician to have Mil lamp codes read and cured the restricted performance is the engine protecting itself as there is a fault in the management system, usually fuel system related,It has gone into "Limp Home" mode to try to limit the damage done untill the fault is cured

My jaguar s type has a new message- failsafe engine mode. when it was amber the car was ok but now that its red i have to limp home. how serious is this please. benn quoted a LOT of money at a jaguar main...

Sorry late reply - just seen this problem. The amber warning is basically saying a problem developing. The red and limp home action is showing more serious developement - But not always very bad news. Had car with same symptoms and it was a faulty sensor on engine, and another similar case was throtle position sensor. Get the car to a garage that can read the faults - so you know what the problem is that has been registered in the memory.
Hope this helps

Abs light, engine light

I have the same car, same problem and I've been doing some research. It seems to be that the most common problem is a faulty ABS sensor that causes the car to go into "Limp Home Mode". Limp Home Mode is automatically initialized when the car senses that it has some sort of electrical or mechanical issue. This is most likely what your experiencing, because I, and many other X-type owners are as well. Good Luck.
