Occasionally engine doesn't start - cranks OK so battery fine. You have to leave it for a while (5-10 minutes seems OK) and try again. When it starts it runs smoothly. Garage changed the airlow meter but didn't cure the problem. I think they don't have a clue what the problem is.
Any ideas?
You should change the crankshaft position sensor this is the only thing i could think of that would cause this type of no start intermittently, when you come back 5-10 minutes later does it fire right up or is it an extended crank time? either way i believe that very well could be your problem and i would have never changed a perfectly good mass airflow meter for a problem like this,,please rate good luck -jeff
the crank pos sensor is an elect-ro magnet that picks up a signal every rotation of the flywheel via a pickup, this provides the ignition timing (spark) and injector pulse if this goes weak or intermittent you will lose both they often don't fail for good and will fail under different conditions such as hot or cold -jeff ps good luck

It could also be the main relay. Mine failed and it wouldn't start some times. if it is the cps then the engine usually stalls once the car reaches operating temp. if the problem is just starting and the car runs alrite once it starts then i think the main relay is the more probable cause.

Clarifications - it is a petrol engine not diesel (4 cylinder). Also, when I come back 5-10 mins later it fires up straight away - no ned for extended crank.
I will try Short Shadey's suggestion and report back - thanks for this. For the uninitiated - what does the crankshift position sensor do (and how could it cause this problem)
2,2 4CYL GAS MOTOR CORRECT?
In all fairness it's hard to diagnose an intermittent problem.... i'm presuming it is a diesel.... have you checked the glowplugs ?
