I have a 1996 Chevy silverado with V8 will not start. Have replaced fuel pump, fuel filter and fuel pump relay. It will turnover and does have enough fuel pressure at top of engine. Will crank when fuel is added in carb, but will not stay running. It has ignition on plugs. I do not smell fuel when carb is wide open and fuel pump running. Please Help.

Did you notice many questions are showing as today or recent and are a year or more old ? I was wondering why we were not getting responses on several . You give great answers by the way .

  • Jeff Armer Oct 07, 2017

Thank's , You do you also . Don't know on the response thing, maybe it's too involved an they just take it to a repair shop . I think most of these people should do just that, take it to a qualified repair shop. I did notice questions that are older ,but someone else had same problem an wanted to know if they had found a fix ,so it was reposted , i believe . Don't know for sure . I start answering question's an don't realize they are from weeks ago or last year . When i see that ,i will delete my answer .

I would say the computer isnt telling the injectors to fire. Pull one out and turn it over and see if it sprays.

Hi

Have you checked the EGR valve, and or the air flow sensor? both could cause it not to start!

Also ensure the earth battery lead has a good connection to the car body from the battery.

Please get back to me if your unsure about these parts.

SOURCE: 1998 chevy silverado. will turnover. new fuel

It's when the security light starts flashing that the infamous "chip" in the key becomes a nightmare to many. Gradually the car begins not cranking anymore or if it cranks it would start and die in a second. Randomly it will do this more and more often until it won't start anymore. VATS, PASSkey and Passlock immobilizer systems are killing cars all over North America, they have a short lifespan and are certainly more effective against owners than thieves. Here is how you save your car
1st trick, Try a spare key that is newer or used less. The pins wear down and so do the keys causing security fail. 2nd trick, (if not starting) turn the key forward 2 clicks till right before it would normally start, leave like that for 10 minutes. ( no less ) After 10 minutes, turn key back then forward and your car might start. I did this in my regal for more than a year. If its shutting down while running, im sorry i have no quick fix... If anything on this page helps you, please remember to comment or give me a thumbs up on the myfixya sight so i can have a better rating to help more people on this. Thanks

Cheap fix: Bypass the chip in your key. Temporary, but effective. Until the TDM (theft deterrent module) in the dash poops out, then you're kinda screwed. I was told that these types of key security systems have a 7-10 year life span. Sucks for us. This link explains the "Key Issue" pretty well.
----- http://vats.likeabigdog.com/

Never worry again fix: Bypass the whole VATS/Passlock/passkey I or passkey II system entirely. Literally take it out, and throw it away. I just did this in my Regal. Took about an hour. Took longer to find the thing than it did to fix the problem. They sell a unit for 200 bucks to totally bypass this system FOREVER. life time-money back and all that. Finally did this in my car. Well worth the 200 if you've looked into getting this replaced... Anywhere from 600-1000 bucks. If you do buy this, please purchase it thru this link. The cost is the same, but i get credit for the sale and im trying to earn my money back, as you will be able to do if you buy fron NewRockies and join the free affiliate program. Thanks
----- http://newrockies.ca?ap_id=judd0081 ----- With this fix, you can take that whole Vats, passlock, passkey system out of your car all together. Good info on both sites.

It works for:
Any GM or Isuzu Vehicle with VATS or PASSKey or PASSLock security systems.
If your car has the chip in the key or in the lock cylinder, then you can save it with this Full Bypass.

SOURCE: 1996 chevy silverado v8 4.3 won't crank. Replaced

Check the voltage coming from the battery and check it again at the coil.I suspect you are not getting the proper voltage going through. Clean all the terminal ends to bare shiny metal and make sure all the connections are tight. If I remember correct your truck still has the HEI setup with the coil in the top of the distributor cap. If all the voltages are good, 12+ volts you should replace the coil. Hope this helps.

I would just replace the relay. Then if it still happens, your fuel pump is drawing too many amps. Causing the relay to overheat and shut off. Time to replace the pump, before it dies on you.

Will not start, does turnover, but seems to be getting no gas. will turn over if i spray auto start in the carborator.

check fuel filter to see if its clogged. (cheapest easiest)
if that doesnt work rebuild carburetor (expensive but fairly simple)
if that doesnt work pull tank if it is low on gas or pull bed if gas tank is full a replace fuel pump (time consuming, hard to do, but fairly inexpensive) I had this problem on a silverado I had and it was the fuel pump.

I have a 1988 chevy silverado 5.7 ltr and it will not trun over, what other option do i have besides replacing the fuel pump

Yes typical problem and know about the pain in the #$#$ about getting the tank down.

The relay is under the hood and in the relay box. Quick check the fuel pressure on the injection rails.

Yes you could add an inline fuel pump to the line and see if that would create enough pressure. I do that on my race cars.

FUEL PUMP FOR CHEVY SILVERADO

fuel filter? how about power to the fuel pump, loose ground wire to chasis? wiring harness? terminals clean at point of connection?did you check the fuel pump relay? Relay is located in electrical center under the hood on the driver side.relay and fuse legend will be on bottom side of cover, you sould be able to switch with another relay that you know works, ie: switch horn relay with fuel pump relay, honk horn to insure both relays are working when either relay is inserted into horn slot. Do you by chance have the electrical schematic drawing for the fuel pump?
