I have a 1994 1500 extended cab pickup, with I think a 350 engine. The truck will not go in overdrive, but will get up to about 40 mph in drive. It will still go in reverse and 1st and 2nd gear but not over 40 mph. What does it sound like it is and how do you test for it yourself? How do you fix it? The transmission has 15 bolts in it. Which transmission is it?

Before you go tearing up the transmission. Check tp sensor (throttle position sensor). Keep in mind transmissions also have electronic parts that govern shift patterns . Signals sent to the truck's computer from sensors govern when it shifts. I would check sensors and wiring to those sensors first before tinkering with a transmission.

need more info i had a 1984 chevy half ton and first, second, and third worked fine but lock up didnt work. the problem was there was no vacum at a switch under the hood on the fire wall also your shift linkage could be out of adjustment. try driving down the road and raise up a little on the shifter.

SOURCE: 99 silverado 1500 shifts hard after its been driven a while

u need to have the system tested for trouble codes, but u most likely have a defective trans 1-2 shift solenoid. to replace this u will need to pull the trans pan off the solenoids are attached to the valve body, also check the trans connector for water or corrosion.

Possible deposit buildup in the throttle body and specifically the IAC (idle air control chambers).This causes disturbance and your systems ability to control air/fuel mixtures at near idle conditions .Perform service, recomending removal of the IAC valve and cleaning with an O2 safe injection cleaner.3M makes a very good line of products including 3M"do it yourself" fuel system tune up pn#8963.Also verify proper EGR operation and no sticky valve or build up there.....good luck

SOURCE: 1997 Chevy 1500 P/U 4x4 small V8. Transmission shifting issue.

you may be confusing the torque converter clutch engagement with o.d. this trans has a problem with the T.C.C. regulator valve wearing out the valve body bore. this will cause the converter clutch to engage only sometimes or not at all. this will set a P1870 code in the control module. when this code is stored in the controller, ( check engine light may or may not be on), it increases the pressure in the transmission causing the 1-2 shift to be harsh. ask a local tranny shop to scan the vehicle ( most will do this for free) if this is the problem they can either fix your valve body (sonnax parts) or replace it with an upgraded valve body. hope this helps

When was the last time you had the transmission filter and fluid changed? Sounds like the filter is clogged.

What is the "overdrive" for?

overdrive is just what it sounds like-the transmission turns slower than the engine, allowing more speed with less fuel. It is only applicable in higher speed, low load situations like open road driving, but most modern cars with overdrive will allow engagement at speeds as low as 35 MPH to save fuel. To a point, overdrive is effective for some city driving, but if you constantly do stop and go driving, in city enviornments at speeds under 40, it is best for the engine (and performance) to 'lock out' overdrive.

Shifts in and out of overdrive once you get over 40 mph?

check the transmission fluid level by putting handbrake on then starting engine and select reverse then check oil level ,if low up and try again if its ok then its another gearbox or fit a manual gearbox

Transmission shifts early (Is this normal?)

the reason it might be shifting so early is because of the gear ratio in the rear end of the truck. it is common in the 2 wheel drive basic model pickup because they were designed to work not travel.

Check the gas cap is sceruely fastened, check for leaks in the filler tube for gas tank, and check for leaks in the hoses/tubes to the evaporative canister.
