Xk8 won't start

I have a 2001 xk8 conv. and love it. But today I tried to start it, turned the key heard a click but engine did not turn over. Also wiper went on, steering wheel readjusted, signal light flashed. Somethings gone haywire! Battery seems fine. Can you give some tips for trouble shooting or should I just bring it in? Thanks xkbob

  • xkbob Sep 04, 2008

This is text book symptoms of a bad or corroded ground wire on the battery, causing a power loss to the vehicle. Many times a battery ground wire will corrode from the inside, create a problem, and show hardly any signs of the corrosion. Replace the ground wire and it should be fine. Also have the battery checked while you're picking up the ground.

  • Anonymous Sep 04, 2008

If you have a bad ground, it won't matter what you jump it with, it's going to have the same response. A corroded ground will not let the proper amount of voltage to get to the system.

Sounds like a jaguar to me. First thing is to make sure your getting proper voltage with that battery. You can check with multimeter then turn lights on and things and see how bad it drops. You may need to change the battery. I would recommend though you bring it in to your qualified dealership. Unless it is a simple fix like the battery then you will want a professional to handle it.
Thanks,
Lee

If all your hearing when you try to crank the car over is a click and the starter is bad. the starter is not engaging to crank the engine. you may be able to tap the starter very lightly to try to make un stick. if it works than you will need to replace it.

When this happens check battery charge with a tester, check amps, if battery is ok it can be a problem with starter motor or ignition.
The battery may not be holding the charge anymore.
Drive the car for a while, so that you are sure battery is fully charged again. If battery lose charge again replace battery, that is not an expensive part.
If after a while the new battery starts again then you have a faulty alternator.
Check also that the serpentine belt that run the alternator is well in tension and not slipping.

If you jumpstart, and engine stops when you unplug the leads, than it is the battery.
If you try jumpstarting with other engine on and does not start is not the battery.
Check if starter motor runs, if it does not is either starter or ignition.
If starter motor works try to understand if it is distribution or fuel problem.
Replace spark plugs, check that there is spark on all cylinders, check the distributor.
Check air intake and air filter, check fuel filter if there is any, see if fuel pump is running and fuel has pressure.

Your problem sounds like the battery is weak. it might have enough power to run lights but not enough amperage to turn car over. this is why everything reset because when you cranked it took all the power from other devices. first check your connections on the battery for being tight and not corroded. If it is the origianl battery I would believe it is bad 6-7 years is about life cycle of battery if your lucky

Why won't my car start? What is making the clicking noises coming from the engine compartment?

soleniod on the starter motor is the most likely source of the clicking noise. The starter motor may be faulty and not cranking over the motor.

I have 2001 mercury courage replace alternator 2wks ago ran great. Now today will not start. Tried to start and it would click when I turned key now won't do anything doesn't have any power....

Could quite possibly be you have a bad starter. I would have it tested. Could also be a bad battery. If, when jumping it, you used too high of a voltage, could have shorted out a wire somewhere

When i turn the start key jn my Nissan Primers (52 reg)it tries to start then a click is heard and the electrics turn off. I turn the key off and it all resets, i try starting again and a click is heard...

The clicking usually means that the battery does not have enough charge to start the engine. Try just turning on the ignition and starting the windscreen wipers. If they move really slowly then your batter is low. Try recharging the battery for a few hours using a car battery charger. Try to the start the engine again after it is fully charged. If this works but then the battery goes flat again, you may have a problem with the alternator, or the battery is not correct for the car (the bigger the engine, the heavier duty the battery.

I have a 2001 xk8 conv and there is no sound from the speakers yet the radio turns on and is fully functional. Any thoughts?

Has someone been working under the dash? It sounds (no pun intended) like the speakers are not connected to the radio. Have you checked the wiring to make sure that all is connected as it should be?
