This seems to be because either the connection to the solenoid is loose or faulty or the solenoid is not activating. the transmission control module sends a signal to the solenoid to activate it. you get the light because the ecm detected that there is a a problem with the circuit. this is due to the fact that there is a voltage value to the solenoid and it is out of operating parameters

Put it in neutral, foot on brake, Pulled up on the the leaver and nothing happened, except a service light came on. Saying"service transfer case". No matter what I tried I could not get it to work. How can i use the 4 x 4 in my 2000 grand cherokee laredo (6 cyl) i dont have the owners manual and i dont know how to use my 4x4 on snow or something like that

With the Jeep in park, move the left shifter to 4 wheel drive. Proceed to put right shifter into drive, proceed to drive. Only use 4wheel drive when neccessary...ie...snow, mud, use 4 wheel lo in steep incline or when really bogged down.

Hope this helps

I have a 93 jeep grand cherokee laredo it has 4all time neutral and 4lo should i keep it in 4all time all the time or does that ruin it

Yes, Your Jeep is what is known as a Quadra-Trac. This type of cherokee is an all wheel drive model. 4 wheel all time is for everyday driving, Neutral completely dissconects the drive train from the transmission and will not move at all. 4 wheel low is more for off road conditions where traction is compromised. 4 wheel low should NEVER be used at speed above 15 miles an hour.

To the guy above: 4 wheel drive is designed for low end pulling power and safer handling on slippery road conditions. 4 wheel drive has NOTHING to do with how fast you go or how fast you stop. Don't post a comment if you clearly don't know the correct information.

Computer light says service 4 wheel drive switch

According to the mechanic who works on my 94 Jeep it's one of three things:
1) Corrosion on the connector to the switch (which is located on top of the transfer case).
2) A bad switch. Part cost about $22.00 or,
3) A bad console display. he says they have had a fair number of console display units fail.

Service 4 Wheel Drive Switch

it's not really a switch but a sending unit on the trans axleor it's the solenoid that operates the trans axle.
