98 Jeep Grand Cherokee laredo, 4.0 Liter, 4 wheel , have new battery, new plugs, wires bug and cap. Engine randomly will not fire as though not receiving fuel. ran perfect then next day had to tow. Engine turns over strong yet no firing or fuel smell. aware could be CPS. One question ,can i disconnect the CPS, tape together wires, or perhaps searate and thus bypass the readings, or will that also not send fuel to injectors. 185000 miles, 14/18 MPG. all ****** positions work perfect. Will a code read isolate the CPS. thank you ,have a great day !

Also when you flood out your plugs, I have found out that you have to replace them. I don't know why but you just do. After doing all this work, you obviously know how to do this kind of thing. You need to check your fuel pressure, make sure everything is at the right psi. As a Jeep guy a have to commend you. But as my dad who taught me, go back to the big three.
1. fuel
2.. fire
3. electric

make sure its getting fuel and air, then make sure its getting fire in the plugs work your way backwards. then make sure its getting electricity to everything. Also I would check your distributor. is it off, make sure pull it and put it back in while #1 is TDC

I wish you lots of luck, I have had 4 Jeeps that I did a lot of work on, let me know where you get. Maybe you can tell me more to help after all this.

Code 12 is battery having been disconnected. It sounds like you may have the firing order right but may be one tower off in the rotation. Sounds like engine timing is too far advanced. Remember, I'm not there so I can't see or hear what you can, but that's what it seems like.

SOURCE: cylinder 1 mis fire on with 4 l

You could try an additive to go in your fueltank, in England its called Redex or STP, that may help as they are designed to brake down the carbon build up

Are a 1993 4.0 liter high output 2 wheel drive Jeep Grand Cherokee countries have the same block as a 1990 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4 wheel drive it also has the 4.0 liter engine but it is not the high...

the first grand cherokee laredo was in 1992 . it was all jeep sports back then, the blocks are all the same .you will need to use some of the sensors from the old motor, the distributor and oil sending unit and temp sensor. will be no problem. if I can put a ford ranger motor in a mercury sable your swap is easier

Spark plug wire position on distributor cap

1-5-3-6-2-4
ALL Jeep 4.0 motors use this firing order. Any year, any model, high output or not.

Also, the spark plug wire placement on the cap, in a clockwise direction from the post nearest the engine block is: 6-2-4-1-5-3.(to the left side of the number 6 post, there should be a hold downscrew or strap for fastening the distributor cap to the distributor.
