The fuel door that covers the gas cap on the right hand side of a 2003 VW Jetta that my brother owned before he passed away won't open with the control in the driver door. We have to sell the car as part of the estate and cannot sell it without being able to put fuel in it to test drive. Also, you can't sell a car when they can't put gas in it. Please help because time is of the essence.

Open the trunk and look around the inside where the fuel filler is-there should be a cable attached to the latch that acts as a manual over ride-if there is none, you will need to carefully pry at the latch to pop it open.

where is the latch on the door? Top, bottom, right or left side of door. What tool would you suggest to try & pry it open so we don't damage the body of the car?

  • mike mountain Aug 08, 2011

the latch should be at the 3 o'clock position, but if you use a flashlight and look around the opening, you will see it-a flat tipped screwdriver works best, use a rag so you are prying against the rag and not the side or paint of the car-they do pop open fairly easily.

did you look for a cable inside the trunk???

  • Anonymous Aug 08, 2011

Yes. Took the carpet out and the tire. The panel on the side where the gas filler is, can't figure out how to get it off. Don't want to ruin any of the inside of the trunk. Will try your suggestion on the door. Will let you know how it goes, and thank you for all your help.

not like I am complaining but my multiple replies and my efforts should have rated better than a 2 thumbs-I am genuinely trying to help out. It is free, after all, and I do know what I am doing. Good luck

btw, that carpet on the side has plastic retainers that hold it in place-removing just one or two will give you access to the area behind the filler door

thanks, hope something I offered helped-I keep one of those magnetic key holders with a door key and attach it to the top of one of my mufflers just for those special occasions ;)

Video isn't working. Check in your owners manual, you might have a lever inside the trunk or area really close to the door.

Where is the button to open gas cap on 2013 jetta

The outer door to the gas cap doesn't lock. You just press on the outer door and it clicks open. This is a problem, however, b/c there isn't a lockable gas cap available right now.

How do you open the fuel cap door on a volkswagen jetta without the power door button

Pushing the door with your hand isn't going to help, but after digging through a lot of info online, I succeeded in doing this. You have to peel back the lining of the trunk on the right side. Once you get a chance to look in there, there's a somewhat transparent white box inside the trunk near the gas cap. Attached to that is a small metal arm that connects to the inside of the gas cap release.

Tug on that piece of metal, and you'll pop open the gas cap.
