I have a 1998 Mercury Sable. The driver side window does not work. My son had the window down and then it would not go up. A Mechanic look at it real quick and said the motor worked and some how got the window up for us. I was at work and my wife took it in. He said the black box in the fuse box needs to be replace. When he put his tester on the driver window button and also the driver window relay it did not keep a steady beeping noise and the other window buttons did have a steady beeping noise when tested. He told my wife that a new one would cost $200.00 and I could go to pick a part and get the hole fuse box for $80.00. I looked at it this morning and all windows but this one works and when you push on the auto button all you here is clicking nosie. Could it be the driver side window relay he is talking about or could the driver window button be the problem.
The black boxes inside the fuse box are indeed relays, which will make a clicking noise. The window buttons are merely contact switches, and if they quit operating properly, the window simply won't do anything, but I've never heard any noises come from one when it quit working. The relays can easily be replaced by hand, so go to a local auto parts store to see about purchasing one, and ask them to show you on their computer screen exactly which relay in your fuse panel is the one that controls the window circuits, and replace it yourself. It's very simple.
