Tip & How-To about Cars & Trucks

Tps shorted on dodge pickups

Found this fix on a road trip .had just put on new tps 3 weeks earlier and on this trip I was in a bad rain storm tps shorted out. Went to parts store.got another new one, but when unplugging the shorted one I noticed water in plug. So on new one I wrapped it in foil. That was 1 year ago to this date, have also fixed several other dodge pickups the same way. No more.tps problems
. What happens is was ayer drips down under the hood and straight on tps plug
this I found on couple of 99, and 2003 and 2004 trucks. So next time you have to replace tps just put it on plug it up and wrap it up good with fiol

P0120 P0220 faults on a 03 Avalanche. First went into reduced power mode. Cleared faults. Truck still will not go over 35 mph. Did not trip the check engine light.

this is an obd2 trouble code table, it can help you understand the meaning of code.
for p0120,
the possible solutions:
If you have access to a scan tool, with KOEO (Key on engine off) observe the TPS voltage. With throttle closed, voltage should be about .45 volts. It should gradually sweep upwards to approximately 4.5 to 5 volts as you depress the throttle. Sometimes only a scope can capture an intermittent glitch in the TPS signal voltage. If you notice a glitch in the TPS sweep voltage, replace the TPS.
NOTE: Some TPS sensors require fine adjustment. If you aren't comfortable with using a DVOM (Digital Volt Ohm meter) to adjust the new TPS, then it's best to take the vehicle to a shop. If the voltage is not .45 volts (+or- .3 volts or so) with the throttle closed or if the reading is "stuck" then unplug the TPS connector. With KOEO check for 5 volts reference voltage present at the connector and a good ground. You can check the signal circuit for continuity by jumping a fused wire between the ground circuit of the TPS connector and the signal circuit. If the TPS reading on the scan tool now reads zero, then replace the TPS. However if that doesn't change the reading to zero, then check for an open or a short on the signal wire and if none is found, suspect a bad PCM. If manipulating the TPS wiring harness causes any change in idle, then suspect bad TPS.

P1762 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0

????1762 should be a transmission problem!!! Makes no sense at all.
Review: you had a tps code (but the engine ran well?) You changed it and it threw injector codes and ran poorly...You took it out and put the old one back (was code still there? Did it run well?) You put another new one in and now you have a transmission code? and how is it running?
Only commonality here is that the tps runs in tandem with all other sensors Make sure you clear old codes after doing any work and see what comes up after driving through a few cycles/ And get a volt/ohm meter and test the tps to see if in fact it's out of range. It somehow sounds more like a MAP sensor problem..or even a harness problem....but, test before getting anything else.

Shuts off will driving, especially if I hit a bumpy road.

check the wires to the fuel pump if they have rubbed against something and the insulation wore through hitting bumps or rain could cause it to short and kick the relay and resets again and will start

Ignition problems

the expeditions had a problem with the rear wiper motor grounding out, i would try replacing the wiper motor first, as for the fuse blowing, it is blowing for a reason, fuses don't just blow. if the wiper motor does not fix you may need to have someone go thru the electrical pin point tests to find the short.

1991 nissan maxima/ only occasionally during cold will not start

If it happens only when it rains it means that water or moisture is getting under the distributor. The distributor needs to be replaced. Good Luck. Let me know how it turns out.
