Tip & How-To about Honda Cars & Trucks

JEEP LOW OIL PRESSURE

If you have low oil pressure in a jeep (six inline motor 4.0 ) after oil change, and the oil pressure is ok when you start cold, and gauge goes down to zero at idle when oil is hot, and warning light coming on, sometimes the problem is the oil filter, put a good oil filter (like napa gold) (or dealer oil filter) before you start replacing parts,

Just had a motor put in 2001 jeep grand Cherokee. Oil gage not working?

Take it back to whomever put it in. That is not ok when you just paid to put a motor in. Make sure it has oil. It all depends on if the motor is rebuilt or a crate motor, a short or long block, what the person installing it re-used. Do not drive it if you do not know if it is pumping oil through the engine. Do not give them any reason to void any kind of warranty. check everything.

1996 jeep wont stay started and oil pressure gauge goes up and down

hot or cold engine , or both.?
the oil pressure will be in direct ratio to engine rpm. slow low, fast high
due to the oil pump connection to engine crankshaft.

stalls.: can be caused by 50 things, or just 4 in physics.
the EGR valve (if you have one, no engine stated)
can stick open and stall any engine, and in fact LOVES to. clean it.
1: list 12vdc to EFI. (spark and fuel brain) dash lights dim?
2: lost compression hot, ? compression tests.
3: lost spark, do spark tests. and timing, checks.
4: bad fueling, too much if floods, and misfires and stalls.
too little fuel, it starves and dies.

the 1 free test, is can you save the stall with a fast right foot.

we do the tests. avoiding those 50 guesses....
each tests are simple and the tools dirt cheap .

oil pressure gauge reads normal when first starts. as it warms up, gauge goes to zero. If I rev engine, gauge goes back to normal.

Two things...when it reads zero, is there any engine noise (tapping or knocking)? After you rev the engine does the pressure read normal at idle and function normally, or does it go back down? Either way, you should not drive the vehicle 'till you have a mechanical gauge (yours is electro-mechanical) put on there and the actual pressure is tested. The condition may be a bad sending unit, a bad bearing or possible obstructed oil pump screen. The repair is obviously different for each one and the price is as well.

oil gauge goes up and down.

If grounding the dash does not work, try putting a mechanical gauge on it and reading actual oil pressure. Pressure does change while driving, but should not wander. With mechanical gauge, check that running hot at idle (in gear if automatic) pressure should not drop lower than 15psi (I'd rather see 20) High reading should be around 40 -50 but no higher.Low pressure indicates a loss of supply or bad bearing on the crankshaft, high pressure may be caused by sticking pressure relief or restriction in an oil passage.
