Tip & How-To about 1998 Dodge Neon

Drivers airbag removal / horn switch removal 1998 dodge neon

I have a 98 dodge neon and the horn was stuck on all the time. I could not find anyone who could tell me how to remove the cover on the airbag so I could get to the horn touchpad. this is what i did.
first unhook the battery.
remove the 2 screws on the cruise control buttons on each side of the steering wheel.
remove the bolt(s) from both sides of the airbag bracket
unplug the horn wire
unplug the airbag wire CAREFULLY (it's the one in the center).( I left this hooked up)
I did not need to completely remove the air bag from my car, because my horn was stuck on and I just needed to remove the cover.
after I removed the airbag assembly I removed all the screws holding the cover on I removed the inner touch pad so I could fix it.
I reversed the steps to put it back together.. the horn works as it should.

2002 Dodge Neon, suddenly the horn was working. Went to press on it and got nothing. Then slammed my fist into it a couple times and it worked. Woke up this morning to the horn blaring. What would cause it to randomly blare like that?

It is probably trying to pay you back for slamming your fist into it....You have to be nice to cars sometimes to get them to cooperate...You know, pet them on the end of the hood and tell them what good cars they are? :)

Anyway, your problem is most likely being caused by a bad clockspring assembly in the steering column. This can also cause your airbag warning lamp to come on. If the airbag light is on, this is almost guaranteed to be the problem. A cracked circuit strip inside a clockspring assembly can expand and contract with temperature changes and cause things to short out. If the clockspring is not the problem then the airbagassembly could be shorting internally. I wouldn't recommend beating it with your fist anymore unless you want the airbag to deploy in your face.

Horn stopped working and now get airbag light...

I had the same problem in my 98 Dodge Grand Caravan. The problem was the "clock spring" cable in the steering column. A flexible cable connects the horn, air bag, and in my case the cruise control to the rest of the car. Chrysler fixed the problem at no charge. It is a recall item that they will fix if it fails. Ford may possibly do the same thing. I had my car fixed last year.

2001 neon horn button will not work beeps with keyless entry

Either a bad ground at the horn itself, or the horn switch in the steering wheel is bad. If you have airbags I wouldn't even worry about it because they have a complex clip that holds it in.
