2002 Toyota Prius - Page 3 Questions & Answers
Is there a mileage recommended
The Prius engine definitely has a timing chain. Do not worry about
replacing that part, unless you hear unusual engine rattles or other
noises.
Regarding belt vs. chain, some engines are designed to have
"interference", so that when the correct valve timing is disrupted,
damage will result to the valves when the pistons hit them. Usually
those engines have relatively high compression, so there is no space
between the piston at top dead center position and an open valve.
Hope helps.
Check enging light came on.
The transaxle is the electrical motor and final transmission assembly, it's a well known problem in the Priuses of that generation. You can read more about that here

Without knowing what the actual error codes were i can't be sure - if the electrical motor is shorted internally it could fry the entire electrical system of the car. But, if the car drives just fine, then it could be just a dishonest shop owner that is trying to fleece you or one that didn't bothered to explain the situation to you - either way not one to be trusted.
Go to another and have it tell you exactly what is wrong with your car: the exact error codes and his exact explanation for the defect.

Abs, engine light on
the "check engine light" is letting you know that the powertrain control module has detected a problem with one of its sensors or there is a system fault. A diagnostic trouble code has been set and is available for reading with a code reader. Most major auto parts stores will have a code reader that you can borrow or they will read your codes out for free. Since the ABS light is also on, the trouble code is most likely associated with the ABS system.
Steering Problem in Toyota Prius
This violent shaking where you can stop it by holding the steering wheel in my experience is due to a BAD rack and pinion. Replace rack and that will solve this problem. Good Luck and thanks for using FIX YA
