It2004 rav4 wont start or crank even battery is newly replaced
My '01 Rav4 with 150k would not crank intermittently. Turns out the silver-plated neutral safety switch contacts (on the front of the transmission housing) were worn out down to the copper. Copper makes a poor switch contact because it oxidizes and makes intermittent contact. The 'jiggle the shift lever' test does not apply due to the way the switch is built. Since the replacement switch is over $200 I investigated (for the mechanically apt only!) by:
- got screws and Nylock nuts to reassemble the case afterwards
- take pictures of how it is mounted on the front of the ****** before dismounting it
- cut the heads off the aluminum rivets
- opened the switch up (careful to save all the tiny pieces)
- it looks like a windshield-wiper arm inside with 3 sliding switch wipers that move across contacts. The contacts are silver plated copper and it had worn through the silver on half of each contact, plus there was black grease in there. I:
- Q-tipped the black grease out, leaving the yellow grease
- rotated the contacts 180 degrees which (on this particular switch) put it back to silver-on-silver
- spread the yellow grease around
- closed it back up using Nylock nuts and screws (if this falls apart you will be stuck!)
No problems so far after 6+ months.
I have a Toyota RAV
have whomever replaced the brakes look into it. seems related. Also is the abs light on as well? usually both lights come on together related to anti-lock braking and traction control.
P2238 code is on
HelloThe engine
and automatic transmission in this vehicles drive train
are fully electronically controlled by a computer called the PCM
(Power Train Control Module). Whenever a problem like this occurs the
computer stores a record of the problem (there are of course some
exceptions to this, like the fuel pump, engine coolant temperature
sensor and MAF sensor for instance) in the form of a fault code in
its memory, to read these fault codes you must have the systems
memory scanned with a special tool. Once the fault code(s) are read
you then must perform the appropriate diagnostic testing to find and
resolve the problem(s) DO NOT REPLACE ANY PARTS UNTIL A
TRAINED TECHNICAIN HAS DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM TO AVOID SPENDING YOUR
HARD EARNED MONEY ON PARTS THAT MAY NOT CORRECT THE PROBLEM
