Black smoke from 2000 Avalon

I can change my oil every 3 decades and it'll be at regular intervals. What are your intervals? 3000 miles? 84 million Mississippi? One lap around Daytona Raceway? Where do you see the black smoke and carbon coming from? A mechanic that "forgot" to change the oil filter is not only a poor mechanic, but he/she is ripping you off. You need an oil filter with each oil change more than you need new oil. If I poured clean water through a dirty Brita filter, would you drink it?There is no way to tell you exactly what's wrong over the internet (besides your mechanic). But, assuming the smoke and carbon you mentioned is coming from...the HOOD: You either have an oil leak, or just a bunch of oil sitting on your engine burning off. Check oil with dipstick (something you should be doing at least once a week in a NEW car, let alone a 10year old model.) The leak could be poor workmanship by your mechanic, or something entirely different, too. the EXHAUST PIPE: You may have blown your piston rings or have a stuck/bent valve.Toyotas are somewhat known for running well beyond when they should. I blew out rings in my '93 pickup and drove it daily for 3 more months before it actually quit. I'm still not convinced it's dead.

I recently bought a 2001 avalon with 139k runs and drives great but check engine light came on, we did oil change and did not go out but also have noticed white smoke coming from tailpipe when cranked

First, the check engine light is telling you there is a problem with the emissions or performance of the engine. You need to have someone scan the computer for trouble codes. The smoke in the morning could be a leaking head gasket - something is leaking into the cylinders and being burned.
