Sounds of it, may be head gasket or welsh plug but the easiest way to find the problem would be to pressure test the cooling system. You could purchase a pressure tester or ask your local garage to pressure test it while you wait as the test only takes 2 to 5 minutes

A mechanic would check for voltage at the starter, the neutral safety switch, and the key switch.Could be a dead spot in the starter. Do the warning lights work correctly ?

Have you taken the car to a mechanic and asked them to check the distributor "timing". Maybe you washed your engine or got it wet and some moisture got into the distributor cap. When you wash the engine hot, leave it running. If you wash it cold, you can put a bag over the distributor. There is also "silicone spray" you can buy to protect the cap and wires from water. You should be able to ain access to the hood fromoutside the car. Hopefully you can access thrugh the grill with a long screwdriver to the latching mechansism

Hi adrian, sounds more like a thermostat problem to me, id change out the old thermostat with a new 1 for starters, hope this helps!

To figure out the problem you have to know the problem mostly when the engine starts ticking its the transmission

sounds like the usual dealer know it all attitude .we are the dealers and we know whats wrong and know more and better than anyone else attitude ,i suspect a faulty door switch and most likely on the drivers door ,you must have more cash than sense all this money to put a light out?? If this is a petrol engine with a autobox then this is more money than the motor is worth its 12 yrs old and with a petrol engine its worthless now a diesel manual ? now your talking but a petrol at our prices for fuel and a autobox to boot .Excuse me while i fall about laughing

try the idle speed control valve, usual suspect

if it doesnt do it in any other gear the first thing i would check is the universal joints on the drive shaft they should have no play in them if that is not the problem take it to a transmission shop and have the do a diagnostic test on it
