ther are thermostats from 170 to 192 it depends in what area you live and how cold you winters are but for most cases 180 should do it best

If it's not overheating and comes up to normal operating temp, then it's working.

If thermostat is working you will have good cabin heat and your car is not overheating.

have the car run for at least 10mn with out the radiator cap after the thermostat opens up you should see the coolant circulating have some one give it gas and look to see if is doing so(careful not to look directly on the radiator) if you see movement the pump is fine if not it could be that the thermostat isn't opening or a bad pump.ps make sure the fluid is toped before you start.

check the fuses. onr or two may be broken . they are pretty cheap

You ran it out of oil! Dont Drive it or run it! Get at Least 2 qts of oil and put it in the engine. See if the knocking goes away when you start it. IF IT DOES NOT, YOU NEED A COMPLETE ENGINE OVERHAUL or a new engine

Are you low on oil, is the oil pressure within specs?

i have the same problem in my 1998 Montero and was surprised to see your posting. I just went to an auto electric expert and diagnosed it as a broken turn signal switch that needs to be replaced.

Have you checked for spark at the plugs and fuel pressure at the injectors ?

Have a scan done at autozone or O'reilleys to get the diagnostic trouble codes read, and go from there. Anytime the light comes on when running, the computer has set a trouble code. It will direct you to the problem. Have the fuel pressure tested to see if it is the fuel pump. If fuel pressure is correct, it may be your catalytic converter. But get the codes first-they should point you in the right direction.

Check fuses.

does it smell like rubber ? if yes your belt is not turning with your pulleys maybe a gone torssioner or a starting to seize up alternator

I dont want to say this but I am thinking cracked head or blownhead gasket a compression test might help
