its a common issue that once the low forward band in ford transmissions wear out that it will engage first and 2nd at the same time. of course this is not mechanically possible and the car stalls out.

most likely a broken timing belt

follow the upper radiator hose to the engine, remove that hose at the engine and u will see the thermostat under the cover.

fan belt problem lossen nut unberneath altinator and the curved tensionioer you'll see it on the front loosen back bolt on the alinator this should free up the whole unit and it will slacken off and drop down this frees the belt when fitting new belt slip a long screwdriver between altinator and block this gives the tension on the belt BUT DO NOT over tension just enough to squeese the belt together need more help I have a 1600 ghia 85 and workshop manual

the switch at the bottom of the steering columb has gone bad you will need to replace it you can get it at any autoparts store. here is a web page with what it looks like and how much it costs.

I would definately suspect that, and also the master cylinder associated with it.

a bad thing to do. The oil will stop continuity to your circuits. Disconnect the ground cable to the battery and flush the oil out with solvent and let dry thoroughly overnight or blow dry with an air hose till dry and let stand for an hour. Now you can start at square one again to see what your problem may be if so

Air mass meter by the sounds of it, or possible contamination of fuel. what fuel system is it? Could be over fuelling have you got any modifications on the car? Great car by the way I love them old S1s.

If there is not a tap (probably there isn't), detach some hose and collect the coolant in some container, if it is not water (shouldn't be water, use antifreeze to avoid corrosion). Loose the transmission belt driving the pump and the alternator by loosing a screw(s) on the alternator mounts and pressing the alternator with a lever in the desired direction, Be careful where you are pressing with the lever. Unscrew the bolts of the water pump and pull it ahead. Check the bearings and sealing and asseble all back. You may want to use the chance to clean the system with a special liquid, following the directions on the can.  

look in the engine compartment for a sticker which identifies the engine family it will either be on the under side of the hood or on the cross brace above the radiator, use this number to order parts.
