Car has had new motor

If the problem comes and go erratically, and can come back when you hit a bump, that is probably a contact.
A bad contact to one of the sensors (eg.O2 sensor, or TPS if it is only when in gear) can cause the engine running rough.

The way to find out is scanning the ECU (main control module).

this cannot be done with a standard scanner because this car is not OBD2 compliant.

I heard that Memoscan U581 can be used on older XJ series models, this info must be verified asking manufacturer.

The alternative is using an Elm327 adapter to connect to a laptop with AutoEnginuity software, or aving the computer module scanned at an authorized garage.

Once the scanner returns the codes, their meaning can be checked online posting here the code.

Regards.

Oil Leak

I would change the air filter, the valve and possibly the oil cap. Also, change your oil filter, it may be clogged. Keep an eye on it just to be sure there isn't anything more serious.

Brake light out

You've got a broken or disconnected wire somewhere. Get a multimeter & check you have voltage on both sides of the fuse. If that's good you know you've got juice running out to the tail light. Remove the bulb & check for voltage in the socket. Chances are you have 20 years of corrosion behind the socket & it's dirty. Either way, you problem is a disconnected or corroded wire.

Transmission went out

This is internal gear separation. this can happen when the transmission is either old or, hasn't been serviced in a while. the gear ratio can become unstable during long term driving and, if not serviced properly, it will fail. this type of high efficiency trany can be quite fragile considering the age of this motor vehicle. i suspect many seal issues as well. i would rebuild as soon as possible.

Jerking motion in front end when applying brakes etc

Hi

I take it you mean the 2 large round bush rubbers, at front of the sub-frame with the large bolt through the center ?

Usually if they are shot, you can see the splitting in them, if they look OK, I do not think this is your problem

What about the 2 Top front cross member mountings, they have a habit of splitting away from the bonding, and this can give strange jerking problems.

Jack up the car on the cross member, and support the body on the 2 front jacking points, better to remove the wheels, and lower the jack a little, and you should be able to see any problem with them straight away, and see even better if you lever with a large screwdriver.

I hope this is of help.

Good Luck

John.
