D4, that is overdrive in a 4 speed automatic. It should go into 4th gear at about 45 mph, although you may not feel it shift. The only reason to use D3 is if you are driving slow, like in city traffic, and the D4 keeps shifting in and out (from 4th to 3rd and back), as if it is "hunting gears". Most people just put it in D4 and drive away.

P4040 code that is a non specific code that could be either EGR control circuit malfunction or security shut down mode meaning that the security system is shutting off the spark and/or fuel.

I wonder if your ABS sensor on one of your wheels is bad. That will make ABS light to come on. Mine was a bad wire connection on my back wheel. on one car I had.

Check all ground (earth) connections on all the lights, what is happening is that the headlights find a earth path via other lights and causes them to come on too

Perhaps it is time to see if the engine will turn over at all. One way is to try to turn the crank pulley on the front of the engine by hand. Most have a large bolt that would take a socket to turn. Another way is to take a large screwdriver and try to turn the flywheel back by the starter. Did you bench test the new starter before installation? Is it time to do that now?
