Why does my horn on 1986 911 Porche keep blowing off & on, on its own when parked or driving?

U have a loose contact on the electric wires, check your fuse box connectors, take a screw driver and tighten them all. If it still do that you have a short on your horn button, just replaced it.

I have a 1986 porsche

Its possible that your starter go to bad. This replacement job is easy but slow. Jack up the car from the jack plate if you got one. Put stands under the back.

The starter is on the right side just above the axle, you can't miss it. The trick was to get the car high enough. Crawl under and from beneath it was no problem. 10 mm allen comes off nicely with a allen socket if you got one. Lay under the car with your head toward the front, and reach up over the top of the trans with your right hand. with a ratchet and long 10mm allen socket, you can get a couple of clicks back on the ratchet and then push up firmly. In addition I find this pictures about this task... howto/starter and other DIY info in 911_starter_install.htm

While down there check for oil leaks, damage, cv boots, exhaust etc...

Additionally, check neutral start switch or clutch switch as their good the starter could have failed as tapping on it with a hammer while trying to start may wake it up but if does start doing this the starter needs to come off to be rebuilt or replaced. If it's cover with oil then that needs to be found and fixed too.

Hope this helps.

My '86 911 battery is fine, but turning the key

Hello there
First you should check a couple of things.
1.check plus and minus at the battery if there are tight.
2.there is a groung strap under the car where the transmission end at the body. You can get to it at right hand side of the car 13mm wrench.Just loose that connection and lube(wd40) and make it tight again.
3.If you can lift the car.You need to check connection on starter itself.
4.if all these thing are ok and the car still not starts, take a jumper (little one) and jump big red wire and small yellow wire at the starter it should crank (do this only with the ignition off !!!).
If this is the case you will need a starter.
anything else let me know

Have not started1986 Porsche 911 in over 1 year,

Hello there
You should take your fuel tank sending unit out and try to smell your fuel if it has a bad smell you will need to drain the tank.To take the sending unit out -8mm socket wrench 6 nut to be removed.then disconnect the connector and pull out the sending unit.

If is ok -just charge the battery and start the Porsche.
If it is running replace the fuel filter and later the oil as well.Oil should have 6 month or 6 000 miles.

If your sure that all your checks have been thorough, the next area to approach would be some type of vacuum leak. That year is treacherous for work space but if the motor is doing what you say, thats the next option
