Is it safe to just start my '85 Porsche Carrera if it's been 5 years since starting it up?

I would recommend that you check a few things before you attempt to start it. It is not uncommon for mice to build nests on top of the engine. This could restrict cooling and damage the engine. You should certainly change the oil first. The 85 has EFI Motronic injection so you may have issues with the injectors as well. Do your self a favor and post this question to the Pelican Parts forum. Do a google search and you will find it. Also check out eurocarresource.com to see if they have any info. bill EuroCar Resource 1 Porsche Technical Forums Pelican Parts Technical BBS

I have a 1985 911 which keeps cutting out while driving, then starts again just fine. What is this likely to be?

Check for low fuel pump pressure or filter blockage, does it happen while accelerating or going up hill under higher fuel demand? It would then run normal if you back off the throttle, getting proper fuel volume. Otherwise Spark/coil/carbon arc cutout if there is some backfire. listen for carbon arcs, watch the wires and distributor in darkness for any arcing. It leaves tracks sometimes inside the distr cap or on the rotor. I have seen rotors with signs of sparking off the back side and down through the center shaft. A blocked catalytic converter has a hissing muffled exhaust sound.

Car losing power

maybe a clogged filter.. why 2 months? it has old gas in it..gas does evaporate to a degree..looses some of its power creating capability.. the mtbe additive is an extreme evaporative.. it will evaporate out very quickly.. remember all fuel tanks have a vent tube on them..

Headlighs and fog lights not working have a new battery

Have you checked the bulbs? I've seen them both go out at the same time before. Either that, or the switch. Pull out the switch and check for continuity across the contacts when you turn the switch on and off.

For you Porsche there is no mark on timing gear. You need to use a special tool made by Porsche which is connected in the back of the camshaft tower to set the timing on cams.

What is the ideal engine

Well this is always a hot topic and I'm sure you could get at least ten people that would be willing to kill each other over their particular rationalization, but for me, the choice is simple. It has to be a synthetic just because it flows more easily when cold and it has a higher oxidation temperature so the ring lands are less likely to get carboned up and cause oil burning. The brand is not that important to me as long as it is well known. The weight should be something near 10-30w. I personally don't think a few points away from this is going to matter. You will have people tell you that you must follow the manufacturers recommendation to the letter. Well, we're 25 years beyond 1985 and modern oil in this engine is more than adequate in a variety of flavors.

You need to have the electronic engine control computer tested for trouble codes, this will need to be done by the dealer as the scanner needed to do this is Porsche specific.
