I was driving my 1984

It can be worn out shifter bushings or worn out trashed' fifth gear syncro. The syncro must be popped out of its alignment and needs replacement as well as re alignment . The syncro pops out in inside dog teeth get worn out.Maybe the 5th synchro ring retaining ring got loose? Opening up the transmission to inspect 5th is the easiest thing you can do on a transmission.--------- Remove the large nut on the R/5th operating hub to remove the 5th gear synchro,For that special tool is required,.You can get this tool from autozone or napa. The tool is to lock the input shaft.Lock up the transmission by selecting two gears at once usually 5th and one other and then remove said nut holding the guide sleeve (sometimes called the spider) on. You will need to do this to get to the synchro hub/synchro ring. Since 5th gear doesn't work you will need to lock using a combination of two other gears besides 5th or use the factory tool (or a substitute) that locks the input shaft. --------- The working procedure is as follows:--- The teeth on the inside of the slider engage the dogteeth (synchro hub) on the gear. For this to happen the synchro ring must collapse (shrink in diameter) to allow the slider to move over it. Inside the synchro ring are brake bands (under the big retaining ring holding the synchro ring onto the dogteeth) which push outward against the inside of the synchro ring keeping it from collapsing until the slider and gear/synchro hub/synchro ring are turning at the same speed. Then the brake bands release, allow the synchro ring to collapse and the slider to move over it and engage the synchro hub or dogteeth. Something may be wrong with the brake bands or the pieces that operate them - the anchor block and energizer block.--------- Also cluck this link for more details. For syncro hub pics and alignment:--- http://technoanswers.blogspot.com/2011/03/1984-porsche-911-will-not-go-in-5th.html ----------------- This should help.Thanks.Helpmech.

Was running poorly then

Hello there
First i would check the fuse no 6 (from the windshield -dirrection) which is for your fuel pump.
Than most common thing is you DME relay under the drivers seat(the black one)
It should click with the key on and of.
Then you should try to listen (with some one else using the key to start the car)
in front of the car for fuel pump sound while cranking the engine.
The computer is also located under your driver seat, they do not go bad, unless the water gets to it
if you need more help

White smoke is comming out

can you smell the smoke, does it smell like anti-freez or oil, if anti-freez there would be steam come out or maybe some water out of the tailpipe, you may have a head gasket problem, or crack somewhere in the head. if the smoke smells like oil ,you may need a valve job.your valve guilds may be let oil seep into the camber when setting.when you start the car up the oil is burnt off. Check to see if there is white foam on the dipstick when you check the oil. If there is, then you have a cracked head or a broken head gasket. Antifreeze must be getting in the cylinders.

be sure that the brake lever is coming up ALL the way. Sometimes even the slightest amount of pressure on the switch will activate the light. Also try a shot of WD-40 on the switch sliding pin.
