The gear selector on my 2004 town car 4.6L is very loose. It has a lot of play and its not the 2 torx screws that you tube videos show. A lot of times its real hard to shift out of park.

The shift tube can crack(gets looser and looser) or the pin break on some cars. Not a fun job to work in that area. Watch out for airbag also. Unhook battery cables and let sit several minutes before working on steering column. May be best to take to good mechanic. Also, you might just have a bad bushing at the trans lever area. don-ohio (:^)

Valve tap cause

Most engines now use hydraulic lifters and they can leak a little, this causes space between then lifter and the push rod. This results in a tapping noise that goes away when they get warm or fill back up.

Loud rattle sound when Idling

I suggest you have your car checked as soon as possible - while a rattling exhaust isn't desperately urgent it could be the cat breaking up which might later restrict the flow of gases. Most importantly excessively loose timing belts or chains tend to make most noise when the engine is idling. If the noise is being caused by this delay could be very expensive.

Lincoln Town Car intermittently won't start. Engine cranks over but it won't fire. Later it will start, sometimes several times in a row, but then will inexplicably refuse to start again.

This sounds like an ignition module issue. It will not be available from any auto parts store as it has to be programmed by the dealer.

Can a valve tap in a 2004 Town Car be the tension on the timming chain?

B Mckenna, Timing chains can make noise, when you say the noise does go away sometimes, it sound more likely to be a valve lifter or tappet noise. You can pick up a mechanics stethoscope cheap and listen to the noise and hear/see if it is louder from the timing chain area or the valve covers to determine location. Trunk will not open using the release button inside a 2004 lincoln towncar

Are you hearing the trunk solenoid engage when you press the button? Check for a blown fuse. Have someone listen at the trunk when you press the button. Check the trunk solenoid for a loose wire or it could be a bad trunk solenoid. If the trunk won't open easily with the key, it could be a sticky trunk lock mechanism.
