The problem on this model alternator is due to burned connector at the plug with the large wires going to it and to a failing diode in the alternator diode rectifier or worn alternator brushes skipping. Just because the alternator checks good at the time of testing (they usually do) doesn't mean it doesn't have a problem, believe me I've repaired dozens of these for just this symptom. The alternator is easy to remove, just a few bolts and two connectors and the battery post. I suggest you replace the alternator and the voltage regulator on the back of it and the square connector that goes into the alternator cavity. I will bet it cures the problem. My experience? 30 years as a Ford dealer service technician.

How do i replace my own starter on my 1987 licoln
1. Raise the car and support it.
2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
3. Crawl under the car and locate the starter. It is easiest to do this by following the positive power cable from the battery down to the starter.
4. Remove positive cable from starter.
5. Remove wires from solenoid.
6. Remove bolts holding starter to the transmission bell housing.
7. Remove the starter.
Installation is the reverse of removal.
