check your fuses and check to see if any of the little metal wires going across your rear glass are broken. They make stuff that comes in what looks like a fingernail polish bottle at the local autoparts store to repair these small broken wires if you find any.

Poss engine mount?? Or poss exhaust off a rubber, put into reverse with bonnet lifted and get some one to look at the engine whilst u take up drive (handbrake on) see if you can get it to reproduce the fault & locate the noise

  • Hi, I can help.
  • The torque sequence for the head of a 1996 Hyundai Elantra 1.8 dohc is indicated in the diagram below as well as the torque specs I have listed.

  • M10 bolts tighten to 22 foot lbs.
  • M12 bolts tighten to 26 foot lbs.

This TSB supersedes the Cylinder Head Bolt Torque Specifications previously described in TSB # 96-20-003, TSB # 96-20-003-1 and TSB # 97-20-004.
DESCRIPTION:
This bulletin provides torque specification corrections to the 1996 and 1997 Elantra Shop Manual, 1997 Elantra Service Data Book, 1997 Tiburon Shop Manual and 1997 Tiburon Service Data Book.
Please record the corrections (listed) in the appropriate manuals and write the TSB number on the bottom of the pages listed below for future reference.
CYLINDER HEAD BOLT:
(M10) 30 Nm (300 kg.cm; 22 lb.ft) + (60°to 65°) + (60°to 65°)
(M12) 35 Nm (350 kg.cm; 26 lb.ft) + (60°to 65°) + (60°to 65°)

From what you have descibed,the radiator has a hole in it.The motor is mounted east/west so it is not getting sprayed up by any fanbelts.Radiator.

then the linkage going to the latch is broken. You will have to get the trim off the inside the hatch and actuate the linkage by hand to make it open. the little plastic clips break off all the time.
