Idle hunting
The first thing you should do is check the basics.
When was it last given a full service?
Make sure the air filter is clean.
Is the fuel getting to all the cylinders?
Are all the cylinders getting a spark? (I'm assuming it is a gasoline motor).
If there are any warning lights on the dashboard GET THEM CHECKED BY A GOOD MECHANIC!

How to drain fuel tank 86 Jag XJ6
Remove as much fuel from tank using a syphon or plastic pump.
Remove tank from car, Tip it upside down to drain remaining fuel.
DO NOT WELD the tank if it is leaking or the remaining fuel fumes will explode.

Fuse box
You should have a fuse box that pivots down from under the dash. There are two or three harness plugs in the back.

Air Conditioner will not charge. Think I have a leak. How much work is it to replace evaporator?
I'm a little lost here. You normally get the high and low fittings when you buy a kit. The original system had the same size fitting for both, but the kit comes with two different sizes for R134 gauges. You may have to look for the high side fitting by itself. How do you know the evap is leaking, or is that just a guess ?As long as the high side fitting is closed, you should be able to charge the low side but you won't know when it is full without the high side gauge.I would try to find the high side adapter and get the gauges hooked up before you proceed.

The car is very hard
Hello chinds, did you replace the fuel filter also, if you did not you should.
The fuel pressure will normally be about 32 psi at idle. It will fluctuate as a
function of engine vacuum. It will increase under acceleration and decrease
under deceleration. When you shut off the engine, the fuel pressure should hold
around 30 psi. It's pretty normal for it to drop off very slowly but should
maintain a pretty good pressure at least until the engine cools off. If it falls
off immediately, your fuel pressure regulator or the non return (check) valve in
the trunk could be a problem. If your fuel pressure does drop off, you can
remove the air cleaner and turn on the key then when you reach inside the Air
Flow Meter and push the flap open, a set of contacts will close in the Air Flow
Meter causing the fuel pump to run. This will pressure up the system. As you
release the Air Flow Meter flap, clamp off the feed line to your fuel pressure
gauge. If the pressure still falls off, you need a fuel pressure regulator. If
it doesn't, you need a non return valve.
I hope this helps, & good luck with your Jag.

I am looking for an
If they all went dark at one time, it is not likely a bulb issue per se. I would check to see if there is a fuse that governs the instrument panel lights and, if so, check to see if it is in good shape. The problem that you are experiencing may very well just be as simple as a fuse...
of course, it may not be; but starting with checking something simple is usually the best place to start.
All the best to you with this...
