1986 Alfa Romeo Spyder. WHen stopped, speedometer shows about 12 mph. At highway speed, it shows about 20 mph. Odomater seems fine.

Phylspilot, my 86 Spider never displayed less than 10 mph. If you look closely, you should see a tiny pin that the needle touches at about 10 mph. That prevents it from ever falling to zero. The needle will not move up until the speed exceeds 10. From my experience, that is normal. In your case, not displaying >20 is NOT normal. The problem could be a few different things. Since the odometer appears to be working ok (I assume you checked that it racks up the miles at a rate commensurate with your approx speed), the speed needle may be sticking. I had the opposite problem with mine - speed needle okay, and odometer messed up. I recommend pulling the speedometer housing out of the dash and checking to see if anything is causing the needle to bind. If it isn't, then check the fine spring where the needle is attached to ensure the spring is okay. You should be able to move the needle with your finger smoothly and have it return gently to the start position (in your case 12 mph). This is a tricky operation. If you remove the needle from the stem, carefully place it back on the stem. Do this without moving the stem. Just reinsert the speed needle on the stem exactly at the small pin that holds the pin at about 10 mph. Check the entire speedometer housing for cracks. Any crack could be enough to prevent proper operation. (That was the source of my odometer issue.) Have fun putting it all back together.

I have 1986 Alfa Spider that won't start. Car has been sitting for a year. I replaced battery, fuel tank, fuel sender unit, both fuel pumps. I seems that the in tank pumps is not getting any po

Could be the main or fuel run relay located in the compartment under the luggage rack, passenger side, main relay also, fuse for the fuel relay 8amp. Electronic Control Unit is also located there.Could be electrical, Hook up a timing light, three leads: Power, Ground, and one that goes around the wire to #1 cyl. Turn the engine over and see if there's firing. Note: u can check all 4 spark plugs this way.Fuse lead goes to pin 30 of the fuel relay, u can jump 30 across to 57 and check for the pumps running, if not, change-I suggest both relays, main and fuel run relays. Both pumps get their 12v DC from the fuel run relay, both should be running when you switch ignition switch to on, then a tachymetric signal is fed from the coil to the relay to keep it running.

Ruff idle and it seems to be running very rich

These cars are notorius for gasket, head gasket, air pressure leaks from old tubing with cracks. I would start there.

Hi how to take off

IIRC......Remove seat.

Remove rear seat cover by sliding down after removing Phillips screws at bottom.

Inside you will see bolts holding seat head rests to seat.

Under seat are Hog Rings holding seat cover to frame.

Car turns over but will not start and it is not

I had this exact problem happen to me 5 days ago. Here's my solution, I hope it's yours as well...

Directly behind the left headlight, there's an air intake. The enclosure holds the air filter. Make sure the filter's not clogged. If it's marginal, replace it. On top of this enclosure, is an air proving switch. If there's not enough air to open the flapper within, it will prevent your engine from running.

Downstream from this device is an oval duct, made of plastic which runs over the top of the engine. This duct is attached to the next device with a pipe clamp of sorts. Mine was loose, and the duct was detached, so air was not being drawn through the duct, thus, not through the air proving switch. Once I placed the duct where it belonged, and tightened the clamp, I was golden. The car performed like new.

Took me 2 days to figure it out, but there you go.

Take a look to see if it's the same problem and let me know.
