1. Disconnect battery negative cable.
2. Remove power steering and air conditioning compressor drive belt by loosening power steering fasteners.
3. Remove generator bolts and generator belt.
4. Remove water pump pulley.
5. Remove crankshaft pulley and timing belt guide plate.
6. Remove upper/lower timing belt covers.
7. Turn crankshaft clockwise until "I" mark on intake camshaft pulley and "E" mark on exhaust camshaft pulley align with marks on cylinder head cover.

The steps to replace an alternator are:

1. Do the following through the passenger side of the engine bay of course with the hood up.
2. First and most important is to disconnect the negative connection to the battery (driver side).
3. Using a 12mm socket loosen the tension adjusting screw and bracket screw. Using a 10mm socket or open end remove wirings. Pinched other connector to remove.
4. Using 14mm socket with 3/8 drive ratchet remove the big bolt on the lower side of the alternator.
5. You might need some help from a pipe for extra leverage.
6. Remove all parts that will hinder the removal of the alternator.For example the charcoal cannister on the firewall just slide up.
7. Ease the alternator through the opening by turning the alternator untile it can pass through the opening.

Ask tow truck drive to slim Jim lock open. Most will have one.

Code P0420 is a code for Catalyst efficiency. The computer is seeing the post Catalytic converter o2 sensor having too much activity. The Cat. should be cleaning the exaust of Hc, co, and Nox. The post cat o2 will read the o2 content in the exhaust and if it moves up and down too much or to high and low, the computer interperates that as the cat not ridding the exhaust of it's pollutants. This indicates that the converter is unable to preform properly. The problem could be a bad cat, o2 sensor (Pre- and/or post cat)or o2 sensor wires, or an air fuel mixture problem that has caused the cat to fail. Many other engine operating system failures can cause the converter to not work properly

This is the best I was able to do. If you post a picture on fixya, it can be 150KB or smaller but I broke it up into 6 different pictures but it's as clear as I was able to get it to be that size. this should be in your owners manual if you have one. You have to pull the door panel off. Then there are a couple of plugs that go to the door latch mounted on the jam. One of the plugs is for the chime. Pull it, but you might have to put a jumper wire in the plug. I work on a lot of different cars and seen them work both ways. So I am not entirely sure how yours works. Unplug it and if it goes off your done. if it doesn't, use a jumper wire in the plug.
