Here is the common cause of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

the computer is going into limp mode cuaseing it not to change. only way to fix the problem is having a scanner hooked up to it to find out what code/s it is showing

O/D light blinking won't shift into 3rd or 4th error codes are P1624,P0733,P0734. could this be solenoids? can i replace it at home?

yes its an interference engine i know for sure. side note most if not all dohc engines are interference.

I'am guessing your want timing marks for timing belt. 1.8L 4 cylinder DOHC.

likely causes-
Faulty torque converter clutch solenoid valve
- Torque converter clutch solenoid valve harness or connectors
- Torque converter clutch solenoid valve circuit is open or shorted
- Low transmission fluid level
- Dirty transmission fluid
Tech notes When the a transmission solenoid is working intermittent, in most cases the problem is not the electrical part of the solenoid; the problem is foreign material obstructing the mechanical function of the solenoid or the flow of the fluid through the transmission valve body. If the transmission fluid is very dirty, it is recommend changing the transmission fluid and if possible removing the transmission pan for further diagnosis. Excessive debris or metal particles on the transmission pan could be an indication that there is a transmission mechanical failure and that the transmission will need to be rebuilt or replaced.

ARe you saying that the shifter lever wont move or that the transmission wont do anything when it is in gear? I believe that you need to check the fluid level if the tranny wont do anything. IF the shifter wont move there is a lock on it that might be bad. There should be a slot you can stick a key in to get it unlocked. I doubt that it is cold weather unless there is some water in the tranny. THat would be the only reason that it would do this. Other than that you are looking at an overhaul. Sorry.

Alot of people have the same problem, including me. Changing the transmission fluid is not going to help this problem. THe transmission filter is not something you change as much as you clean and reinstall, its just a metal screen. Call Kia and ask for an "OVERDRIVE SHIFT SOLENOID" they will need the last 8 digits of your VIN, vehicle identification number, to locate your part. I am in the process of changing mine. The part number should be something like 46313-39051. That number is for a 2001 Kia Optima, with the 4 cylinder. There are three shift solenoids bolted to the bottom of your transmission should. I'll let you know what the difficulty level when I am finished.

I have 2001 Kia Rio 1.5L size engine. Was flashing the Overdrive light in the instrument cluster, mechanic guy just replace the Speed Sensor and light went off.
