Hi, i changed battery on a 1997 3.2 sports xj6,now
Welcome to Fixya
Check the voltage of the battery first. Use a voltmeter and test the battery. You should get a reading of 12v or higher. Next is to check the terminals of the battery. Both terminals should be clean and connections are tight.
If everything is ok. Check the the dash lights. Do you have lights under the dashboard? Are you getting clicking sound when you try to attempt to start your engine.
Please let me know if you need further assistance.

How to replace bulb in front bumper turn signal
hello,
Identify the blown bulb. Note that if a headlight bulb has blown, the dip beam is on the outside and the high beam is on the inside. Turn off the ignition switch and light switches.
Open the hood and replace any blown headlight bulbs. Press the plastic spring clips and remove the bulb holder from the assembly. Pull the bulb out of the bulb holder and replace it with a new bulb. It only fits one way. Be sure not to touch the bulb's glass. Replace any parking lights at the same time, they are in the headlamp unit too.
Remove the front turn signal light unit in the bumper to change the turn signal bulb. Push gently on the inside edge and insert a blade between the bumper and the lens at the outside edge. Compress the spring and remove the lens. Fit a new lamp by inserting it into the plug. The side marker light is changed using a similar process.
Open the trunk to replace the rear fog light, stop light, tail light, reversing light and turn signal light. Remove the rear light cover and turn the bulb holder fastener 90 degrees counter clockwise. Remove the expired bulb, fit a new one and replace the parts, turning the bulb holder clockwise.
Thanks..

Automatic Transmission Failure
could be anything and you will have to ask a mechanic to have a look to diagnose it for you ,as its 1995 model then the chances are that if the gearbox is gone you may as well junk the car because the retail value is less than 500 euros ,owing to the high cost of running these cars where as a similar diesel ford escort or opel astra or similar will be worth a lot more than such a fine grand old car like this ,its just modern economics of fuel and road taxation costs make these cars uneconomic to buy second hand .Look on autotrader.co.uk and see the prices for these cars and you will see what i mean ,if its any consolation i have a complete car in the yard for spares so if your near alicante spain your welcome to come and take the gearbox out for free

What weight motor oil should
A 10/40 or a 20/50 will do nicely ,use the cheapest turbo diesel/petrol multigrade you can buy from supermarket as this oil being designed for diesels as well will keep inside of engine clean ,then change oil every 6000kms and oil filter every third oil change and it will last for ever ,mine has its a 94 XJ6 4.0 and i have had the cheap diesel /petrol oil in it all the time with no detrimental effect and i was mad enough to do 150mph up the A7 motorway and got clocked by a speed camera ,told them my son from aussie was driving it ??? got away with it ?phew ? automatic ban and prison here in spain

My battery is down and
If your car is unlocked, is there any way you can access the trunk by lifting the back seat backrest?

1985 jaguar xj6 has been sitting for over one
You might be able to pour a small amount of fuel in carb. A little at at time to get it primed. Once started get some fuel system cleaner into fuel to clear out any condensation and build up from sitting. Other things - do an oil change, check steering and suspension bushings, replace fuel filter, pull and visually inspect spark plugs, let car fully warm up before attempting to move - let transmission fully warm up and change trans fluid at earliest convenience, Make sure tires are safe- pressure and check for weather cracking and flat spots. Check all belts and hoses. This should get you started.

Can you lock the engine
Are you referring to - to keep it from rotating while working in it? If so, disconnect battery leads and there is also a specialty tool that clamps/bolts to flywheel to prevent rotation. You'll have to shop at Jag specialty shops for this tool.
