Defender fuel problem

Youve got me here thats for sure ,old diesel man like myself and as this is a 97 then i wouldnt expect to find a lot of electronic gizmos.Only thing i can think of on the quick here is that their is a fuel pump in the tank and it should only run for a few seconds on start up to clear any air in the system and some reason its staying on all the time ,so check it out with a manual or look at the tank and see how many wires are running to the sensder unit in the tank ,if two wires then thats just the gauge but if two more heavier thicker cables then it has a fuel pump and if so disconnect them and try it without this pump running ,if it works then fit a non return valve in the feed pipe by the pump and this will stop the fuel running back ,just like the old motors i used to work on in the year dot .The fault is if iam correct is either a relay sticking or a faulty ECU ?? Sorry i cannot be more specific as havent done one as YET?? Now how about changing a clutch on 1962 land rover ?? i used to enjoy spending all day taking the floor out??
