It's running rich , to much gas is getting into the cylinders . Leaking fuel injectors , a fuel pressure regulator leaking , or the PCM is supplying to much fuel to compensate for a problem that it think's exists. an O2 sensor stuck lean , a bad or dirty mass air flow sensor . Is the check engine light lit ? You should take it to a repair shop an have diagnostics run on it !

what tool are you using, ? the car is not OBD2 but is OBD1, (non standard) and only factory tools work on that OBD1 port. (full support) the port in under the hood..... you will only be able to use the FLASH codes,. lacking special Toyota tools (its a Corolla in Snake skins(suz) also there are many ports. most have 2 ports. one for ECU and one for the transmission, (if electrically shifted) so ill try to ask the question for you, better. "how to I get the DLC codes from my EFI system , for engine issues." if its the one next to headlight there should be a screw next to headlight screw under the hood, you need to unscrew from the top manual refers to it as 'a hidden screw may be under the hood for retaining the lamp' and one on the light assembly. the other side marker light i got from crawling under the car. i no longer have my geo so i cant verify

A lot of times this is what happens with a low battery, loose bolts on the starter itself, or a bad throw out bearing on the starter. Have the battery and alternater checked at an autozone or o'reileys for free first because a starter can be a messy job.

I recently read about this there are 2 timing marks under the plastic cover the lower number is for a 3 cylinder and the higher number is where it is set for a 4 cylinder engine. Hope this helps.
