You are on the right path, this sounds like the resistor is bad and keeping your fan on, the resistor is located on the passengerside under the dash bolted to the heaterbox next to blowermotor,also the correct name for this is fan control module,heres a diagram to help you it show the module inside car, hope this helps.

Nick, put a small heater under hood of car for 3 to 4 hours, point it towards front of engine directing toward water pump location. After 3 to 4 hours try to turn engine over to see if it is seized. the airbags are disabled might be from the crash sensor or the seat belt buckle.

The issue you are having causing the cluster to go dead is called DIM basically it is not that hard to fix if you have time and most of all patience you will need to pull the cluster out and remove the back plastic housing it has 12 Phillips head screws holding that on be very careful the best way is to put the bezel face down on a towel so u don't scratch the clear plastic and do not move it now for the fun part you will need a precision soldering iron and you will need to go through about 150 soldering joints that's were your patience is critical if u don't want to do this yourself there are places that you can send it to on eBay that fix them for 200 bucks anyway if you have any questions regarding this vehicle I know the whole car like the back of my hand Regards Chris ...

Several 2002 Volvos I have worked on had a problem with the cluster. I bought one on ebay for my S80, and it works like new. Caution: the numbers must match between your cluster and the replacement!!! The air bag problem is more than likely a bad module. I had to replace mine, too. I would start with fuses.

I changed spark plugs,boots,an coils ordered from amazon an they worked just fine.
