Sounds like you got some bogus advice. First go to your local library and check out the repair manual that covers your vehicle. This manual will instruct you on how to carry out most all common repairs. The belt you reference is probably not the timing belt, but that's something you'll learn when you find the repair manual for your car. By the way you should have your own repair manual for your car. It's very valuable, and can give much needed info to help decide if you can do the repair you're contemplating (is in your experience level). You'll make things worse if you can't/won't follow instructions. Most repairs can be done by the owner (in my opinion). If you know basic hand tools and do this one thing - always read the instructions beforehand to be sure you understand what the particular repair entails. Also this will alert you to the need of any special tooling to complete your task. Once you find a repair manual at the library you can compare the different brands. You need to check for a vacuum leak. If it is a big leak, you can usually hear them. If it is a smaller leak, you can usually find them by spraying carb cleaner around the vacuum hoses and listen for the idle to climb. If the rpms go up then there is a leak.
