How do I check my tranny fluid on my 01 Subaru Impreza?

I assume you have the 4 speed auto and that it is red auto transmission fluid which is leaking.

You obviously have a leak from the transmission itself, or from a transmission fluid hose, which must be identified and fixed urgently. The leaking fluid is no doubt coming into contact with the hot exhaust system (often by blow back) which will give you a burning fluid smell.

You must ensure you check the transmission fluid level immediately and top it up with the correct spec fluid. Otherwise the transmission will malfunction if very low on fluid and you will potentially damage it.

You need to need to get the vehicle to a Subaru dealer for service or to a competent/reputable auto transmission specialist to have the leak identified and fixed as soon as possible.

CLUTCH JUDDER IN 1ST GEAR WHEN START OFF THEN OK

A note to the first answer, if the clutch chatters in first gear that is indicative of a bad pressure plate or broke clutch springs, if it is not removed and repaired soon the clutch will shatter and damage the flywheel and possibly the input shaft and the the pilot bearing which could damage the transmission. There is also a possibility of the spring coming out of the clutch plate and wedging between the flywheel and pressure or clutch plate and causing severe damage to the internal parts just mentioned.
