After car is warmed up and thermostat has opened
There are several causes. I need to know what kind of car? milage? this iwll determine if they are manual controls, or electronic controls. Do you see any water/ antifreeze dripping from under the dash? If no...probably a control wire or vacuum line that should be opening a valve to allow hot water to run through the heater, that is not moving, remaining closed, NOT allowing hot water to run through the heater.
Overheating
I hate to say it, but I think that you installed the thermostat upside-down. If so, the coolant is constantly circulating through the radiator, and it takes a very long time to come up to normal operating temperature, which means no heat to the passenger compartment. Try removing the "gooseneck" again and make sure that the "long" end of the thermostat is facing down into the engine. Good luck.
