1999 Lexus LS 400 - Page 2 - Answered Questions & Fixed issues

I took my Lexus to dealership in Tampa. They said it would be so expensive to fix the steering wheel adjustment not working , that I should get rid of the car. My 99 Lexus is beautiful and runs great. It is sad that dealers feel this way. Bill in Tampa

firstly check with your car scanner ,read for fault code, as my experience the alternater fault due to leak in alternator regulator ,check with multimeter for your voltage, at least with light and air con on, it should at least 13.6volt.normally with alternator light on when engine running.conform alternator,replace one thank you

Your alternator has to produce at least 13.1 volts to recharge the battery. If less is produced then possible causes are alternator, wiring, fuse, drive belt. Your ABS and VSC modules will self protect and shut down when low voltage is detected. Repair the charging problem and the warning lights will be sorted too.

Stuck as in the lever that allows the steering wheel to move up and down will not move, or as in you did not know that lever existed?

The ignition coils are built on the spark plug boot. You have to take the plastic cover off thats on the valve covers. The cover usually says V8 four cam on it.

take it to a proper dealer or mechanic. It soulds like the timing belt could be off by a tooth or so and your cam timing is off.

It could be, however the first thing I would check is the Ignition Coil and spark plugs. The spark plugs may not be getting enough power from the ignition coil or they themselves are faulty.

Have you checked you have enough transmission fluid? In this circumstances as yours the transmission will need to be removed and rebuilt. There is a seal inside the transmission,guess that has worn out.

try disconnecting the battery and joining the leads together for a few minutes

look inside the trunk. take the trim down and you will see there are plastic nuts holding the tail light in. remove these nuts and pull the taillight out.

you do not have to touch it ,once the wire is pulled out then their is no contact to earth so it should go out ,unless its connected via the computer ?? but i personally have never seen this but ?? you learn something every day

The best and only way is to disconnect the wires and unbolt it.

those have all been inside the gas tank since the V8 died. even on a lexus.

For 1999 Lexus GS400 4.0L SFI DOHC 8cyl the Flasher is located front seating area, driver side, behind instrument panel, mounted on upper corner of dash.

The check engine light comes on mostly when you have bad gas tank cup,or you don't tight enough the gasoline.Go to any auto-zone and request the obd scanner,at no charge just leave your driver license or credit card,connect the scanner follow the instructions.They will check up and the check engine light will come off in the next 3 to 5 days.

the sensor for the washer fluid is bad or connector is loose.

Smoke is a sign of engine burning oil, which is caused by faulty piston rings, in most cases it's cheaper to have another engine installed in the car, instead of having work done on pistons. try in front under the exhaust manifold most starters on front wheel drive cars is here.

turn the bulb housing, a quarter turn, it will pop out. turn the bulb a quarter turn, it will pop out. take it to auto zone and they will give you a new one. :) some of these lexuses have a securing ring that is a little bit of a pain, mess with it a little bit and you will figure out how the pin comes off. usually just a little carefull twisting and squeezing.
