cant open sunroof but motor turns
Same problem mine will only work when it is warm out because of the gasket. When there is the slightest difference in colder temperatures I need to press on the top of the sun roof while hitting the button to have it slide. Using the gasket cleaner may be a good idea. I haven't tried that yet though so don't take my word

1999 Subaru Legacy Sedan.. speedometer works intermittently dealer replaced sensor, to no avail..
I finally fixed mine, on my 1999 Subaru legacy 30th anniv edition. . .
I removed the speedometer head, and resoldered the green connector on the board. Then I also ran a wire to duplicate the trace wire from the middle pin to the first connect (about 4mm). Problem gone.

automatic shift knob stuck in park, can not move it in 97 Legacy Subaru
There are two switches that have to be activated before the park lock is released. The first is on the brake pedal, the second is the thumb button on the shifter. Most often the brake pedal switch is the problem, it can be pushed back and forth in its mount, sometimes it gets pushed to far and no longer switches when the pedal is depressed. You can also use the emergency release and shift out of park anytime. There is a plastic "ring" around the base of the shifter, in most cars it is black, in cars with wood grain trim pieces it is wood grain. The best way to get it out is to unscrew the center console and push it up from the back, you can pry it up buy you may break the tabs that hold it in. When this piece is out, look down at the front of the shifter base, there is a hole a pen will fit down into. If you push a pen, pencil, or any small round straight object down into that hole, it will mechanically release the shifter lock and allow you to get out of park. My daughter drove her 96 Legacy that way for months until I got around to fixing the brake switch.

96 subaru legacy 180000 miles.car has a driveline vibration ,not extreme, but worse on hills and acceleration. at 70 mph going up a long grade this vibration suddenly got catastropic- like so bad you feel all 4 wheels are square and falling off.after pulling over and finding nothing visably wrong, wheels tight,no flats[car has brand new tires] I crippled 20 miles home at 30 mph .vibration was bad even this slow .axles have been replaced, wheel bearings are good no noise or play.could it be the center bearing on the non -reparable -expensive as hell -driveshaft?
I had similar problem with my '99 outback. Replaced the front half shafts and seemed much better. A few months later seemed to be comming back so replaced the driver side shaft again and the problem disappeared. I had put in rebuilt shafts and the driver side shaft was not rebuilt correctly.

What would cause a rattling noise when in reverse? Sometimes it will do this in park too.
This depends on weather the rattle is in the engine/ gear box/or the Exhaust system as it can be in any one of them
THE gear box could have the reverse gear worn and the exhaust could have a loose clamp /brackets and muffler baffel plates broken away in side .
These are the most common things to look at first so jack up the car get under and bang along the exhaust with your hand and you should find the rattle.
Let me know how you get on. Ron

subaru legacy b4 fuel gauge read empty when full?gauges jump about too
You have a fuel level sending unit that is not working properly. It is located inside the fuel tank.
Also, when you ask for help with your vehicle it would be very helpful if you could mention WHICH "Legacy" we are talking about. It seems that Subaru got "stuck" on the Legacy name - there are actally 9 choices for "Legacy" just for your model year. (see list below) There are also 2 different engines available for that year a 2.2L and a 2.5L.

I would like to find out if anyone has had a problem with the driver side window not going up, I have been looking at parts and notice it also has a regulator . How would I know if it is the switch or the regulator both are pretty costly and most say I can't return so if any one could help I would greatly appreciate any advice Thank you
when talking windows in vehicles the regulator is the part that actually pushes the glass up and down the track. IT has 2 gears and is driven by a cable from a motor, reduction gears on a motor attached to the regulator , or from the winder handle in the door panel. At this point I would be looking at relays , fuses , switch controls ( upper and lower limit micro switches) or a problem drive for the regulator.
