At oil light flashes shifts jerky style loses power

More than likely your sensor got contaminated instead. Spray it with carburetor cleaner and blow it out with air, and put it back. It should cure your light problem.

Location of crank sensor

The crank sensor is behind the timing/cam belt covers. To get to this the drive belts must be removed as well as the crank pully.

Overheating

The 97-99 2.5L DOHC Subaru engines were notorious for this problem, blown head gasket is very likely the cause. It is possible to test for the presence of exhaust gas in the coolant to verify. The reason the car seems to be overheating then cools down quickly when shut off is that the hot exhaust gas displaces the coolant at the top of the engine where the sensor is. If it happens consistently you will need to deal with it, I have worked on an engine that was run many miles under this condition and it damaged the block beyond repair. If you are a decent shade-tree mechanic, it is possible to do the work with the engine still in the car, you will have to raise it up an inch or two to get sufficient access. I have personally done 3 engines with this problem, a 98 and 2 99's.

Noise in engine compartment

I would remove the drive belts and see if the noise is still there,if not blame the tensioner pulley,if the noise is still there it's in the timing belt system, don't let it go if that's the case major engine damage could result.

How do you hold the cam gear and loosen the bolt?

Are there flats on the camshaft where you could put a spanner wrench? Or a place you could put a pipe wrench on? Maybe you could put the old belt on the cam gear and hold or wedge it tight somehow to loosen the bolt.

99 legacy wagon won't fuel tank

most commonly the evap systems vent solenoid is plugged or inoperable causing pressure to build in the fuel tank as you fill up. this high pressure triggers the gas pump nozzle to shut off as it would if the tank had been filled. replace canister vent
