You didn't have the engine overhauled for $800. Maybe you had the timing belt replaced?
The check engine light could be on for any number of reasons. The only way to know for sure is to have it scanned and retrieve the trouble codes. Once you know what codes are present post them and we can help you out a little better.
Most auto parts stores can help you get those codes. Call ahead and see if they offer that service. I’m happy to assist further over the phone at

Hi! Just a thought on this. Changing the MAF sensor is good but im suspecting a faulty O2 sensor and TPS (throttle position sensor). I strongly suggest that you replace both. Good luck on this and thank you for using FixYa!

unhooking one of the battery cables and leave it off for at least 20
minutes. When you hook it back up the computers should re-boot. That has
solved problems for me with heater, interior lites, power windows, AC,
day time running lites, power mirrors, CD player, and wipers on GM autos
and S-10 PU and Dodge trucks. None of the switches are connected to the
device they control anymore. The switch tells the computer to open the
window and the computer send a signal to the window motor. When the
computer gets confused strange things will happen or not happen. Of course you may have to re-set your radio stations.
Seems like a stupid question,
its not easy but stand back and take a good look and follow you instincts,if you can remove the air duct then remove it out of the way then remove the plactic bit at the back of the headlight and the smallest bulb is the one on what looks like a very very small spoon turn to the right and pull back to you and there is your bulb.good luck.adrian,,,,,
1998 Subaru Legacy Outback Limited
It should be under the hood in the relay center. You can also follow the wire up from the control solenoid.
.3 is not a good reading at all.
1998 legacy outback. engine light comes on &
Knock sensor has gone bad most likely. I had the same problem with the same car and replaced the knock sensor. Fixed the problem. Very common with Subarus.
It's an inexpensive part but it requires patience and small surgeon's hands to get to it and replace it. Lots of how-to articles on line.

Can u show graphic for replacing starter motor
I can't show graphics but I can tell you how, firstly locate the starter motor, remove the battery lead from the starter motor, plus the small lead from the solenoid then remove the bolts that secure the starter motor, pull the starter motor out, replacing is the reverse.....hope this helps....cheers
Was driving my 1998 subaru legacy gtb when on
It sounds to me like the fuel pump failed. Someone is going to have to test the pressure to be sure. Also if you spray brake cleaner or quick start and can keep the engine running while spraying then you know for sure its a fuel delivery issue,
98 Subaru leaking oil
Oil leak will not change run temp but can cause a fire.
The smoke is the oil burning on the engine. The 1st thing you need to do is clean the oil off the engine.
Next top oil off to the full line on the dip stick. Now start the engine hold idle up to around 1600 rpm for 1 to 2 minutes keep engine run and look for the oil leak. Don't get caught in any moving parts and things will be hot so be careful. Most likely from your valve cover.
How to change thermostat on 1999 Subaru Legacy
Thermostat is located on the drivers side front of the engine, underneath. You will need to drain your antifreeze first of course. Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the thermostat housing, then remove the housing and thermostat. Take note of the direction the thermostat is oriented so you can put the new one in the same way. Install new thermostat, reinstall housing & lower rad hose. Check your owners manual or repair book for quantity of antifreeze to refill! It doesn't always want to take all of it at first. If you fall into the trap of not putting all of it in, you WILL overheat your engine & most likely blow a head gasket. Best procedure I've found is to elevate the front of the car & remove the bleed screw from the passengers side top of the radiator, then fill. That will help the air escape from the system. Air pockets in the system = hot spots and you dont want those.
