Just bought a subaru legacy

Entertain the possibility that feature was bad, killing the battery over and over, and a prior owner disabled it to save himself and all future owners a lot of jump start aggravation. Power locks seem to have a common problem of self activation on and off when the ignition is off. Now I do not think that my Subaru has this problem, but if and when it develops dead battery in the morning syndrome that is the first place I will look.

Check engine light comes on

hi could be a few things, easiest thing is to pop into a garage and get them to plug in software that reads ecu fault codes doesnt take long and gives you a def cause of problem without having to replace heaps of parts eliminating problem. Just going by what you have explained it sounds like it could be a dirty sensor, faulty throttle position sensor or even a fuel pump on its way out or clogged fuel filter hope this helps

Over heating change thermastat waterpump radiator

you have a bad head gasket, best cheapest fix, is Blue Devil. its a great sealer and its pretty permanent. I have used this on at least 3 Subarus' and I haven't had any problems again.

Just be sure to follow the instructions to the FULLEST and VERBATIM, how ever you don't need the whole bottle, i usually keep the other half for a year then throw it away, if I dont use it before then, also it is 100% money back guarantee. so no loss there anyway...

My 1989 legacy will start,

hi this sounds like the throttle position sensor as these dont trigger an error code or engine light when they start to go, anything else like fuel pump or knock/cam sensors or relay will. secondly it could be a coil pack causing it to miss/**** quite a bit

Whats a solenoid? turn key and

To answer your question, a solenoid is an electrically operated 'contactor' or switch. All cars have a solenoid that effectively, temporarily connects the battery to the starter motor. The starter spins the engine over and when it starts you release the key. When you release the key from the start position, you turn off the power to the solenoid and a spring breaks the connection between the battery and the starter. As such, the starter now has no power, turns off and disconnects from the engine flywheel.

It is possible for everything to be fine except the contacts in the solenoid. All electric items work, windows, fan - everything ... except if the contacts INSIDE the solenoid are burned, there will be no power passed from the battery to the starter.

What does it look like? Generally a old fashioned 35 MM film can with two big wires and at least two little wires on it. It is generally in the engine compartment. Sometimes, the solenoid is on the starter and if that is the case, it will be difficult to find.

How do you test it? Check the voltage on the starter side of the solenoid with the switch in the start position. If there is no voltage on that wire, your starter will not run. Use a Volt/Ohm meter set on DC power. Alternatively, you can use a 12 volt DC test light - a couple bucks at the hardware or auto parts store.

How do you find it? Find the + wire on your battery and follow it. It will end at the solenoid, no matter what it looks like.

Can you fix it? Maybe but probably not since you seem to be completely unfamiliar with it. Possibly, you can get some instruction from the friendly counter guy or gal at your local full service auto parts store.

Since you cant start your car, you will probably have to have it towed to a repair shop, unless you can get it started by pushing (I don't recommend this for the uninitiated, and particularly if the car is an automatic shift)

I have a 1997 Subaru

Hi

You have already changed the brake switch now pull upward on the brake pedal, towards yourself & the seat & see if the brake lights go out. If it does, the return spring is weak or broken.

However there are various reasons for the brake light to come on. As soon as your brake light has come on first check out your brake situation .Turn the engine off and open the hood. Check the brake fluid resevoir and if it is low you might want to have the system checked. To find the brake fluid reservoir (also called the "brake master cylinder"), look for a round black rubber cap about 2 to 4 inches in diameter that covers a plastic container. Imagine where your foot would be if it went all the way through the car toward the engine past your brake pedal. This is where you will almost always find the brake master cylinder.

Check the fine print on the rubber cap. It should say, "Use only DOT 4 (or 5 or 3) brake fluid."Remove the cap. If the cap is dusty or dirty, wipe it off with a rag so no dirt particles fall into the reservoir.

Check what kind of brake fluid your car requires. This is indicated on the rubber brake reservoir cap and in the owner's manual. DOT 5 is the highest grade available right now and can be used in any system. If your car requires DOT 4, do not use DOT 3 or a lower-grade fluid. DOT stands for Department of Transportation. Fill the reservoir with brake fluid up to the "full" line. If there is no "full" indicator, fill it to the top.

Put the cap back on and wipe up any spills. Turn the car on and the light should be off. If your problem persists or for a regular checkup it is suggested to take your car to the auto shop.

However if the check engine light comes on it means your vehicle's computer has determined that a component or system in your emission control system is not working properly.

When the light comes on, one or more diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) are stored in the engine control module. These DTCs remain even if the light goes out. To address a Check Engine Light problem, the DTCs are retrieved and the appropriate troubleshooting information is followed in order to determine the problem.

Please get back to us if you have further query else please accept the suggestion.

How to tighten fan belts on 1997 Subaru 2.2 Legacy

there are no fan belts - there is a alternator/power steering belt and a air conditioning belt. There is an adjustment bolt that you will need to tighten. You want to have roughly 1/4" of slack or so after tightening the belt. I recommend taking a look at a service manual for the location.
