Was siting at stop light and motor just quit?now spins fast like jumped time?

It sounds like your engine may be seized. When the water pump goes, your engine can't get the coolant it needs, so it overheats. If the engine overheats badly enough, it can actually melt together, or 'seize,' which will let it crank, but nothing else. I would take it to a mechanic, purchase the Haynes manual and consider having the engine replaced if your Subaru is otherwise in good condition. For $1500 to $2000, a new engine on a car you've already paid off could give you a few more years without a car payment. Look for a mechanic specializing in imports and ask about engines from the JDM, or Japanese Domestic Market. Japan makes consumers replace their engines when they're still fairly new, so a secondhand engine from there might be as new as 50K and cost as little as $500. Good luck with it!

1996 Outback Tachometer intermittent

If you have no other symptoms other than a faulty reading then it can be 2 things, leaking ignition high voltage wires or a faulty tach, i would go with the tach.

Subaru Liberty 96 dropping out of gear intermittently and stalling, too.

HelloThe engine and automatic transmission in this vehicles drive train are fully electronically controlled by a computer called the PCM (Power Train Control Module). Whenever a problem like this occurs the computer stores a record of the problem (there are of course some exceptions to this, like the fuel pump, engine coolant temperature sensor and MAF sensor for instance) in the form of a fault code in its memory, to read these fault codes you must have the systems memory scanned with a special tool. Once the fault code(s) are read you then must perform the appropriate diagnostic testing to find and resolve the problem(s) DO NOT REPLACE ANY PARTS UNTIL A TRAINED TECHNICAIN HAS DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM TO AVOID SPENDING YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY ON PARTS THAT MAY NOT CORRECT THE PROBLEM

?acceleration sluggish when cold?

any codes like air temp sensor, MAP or o2 sensors. A local auto parts place should be able to read the live data stream for you at no cost. Could just need an intake clean. I have seen a bad coil here and there(when wet). Great car.

Have you ever had the transfer case for the all wheel driver serviced with new oil? If not do so and see if that helps with this problem. I suspect it will.

Can't shift out of park what could be causing this

Your shift-lock solenoid is not working. The solenoid is controlled by your brake lamp circuits. The first thing to do is to check your brake lamps to see if they are working. If the brake lamps are working, the solenoid is most likely defective. If the brake lamps are not working, then you need to diagnose your brake lamp circuits to get your shifter working. Most likely cause would be the brake lamp switch or a short in the system that has caused the brake lamp fuse to blow.

Engine knocking on my Subaru legacy 2 litre twin

By your description it sounds like a rod or crank bearing has gone bad. This is a VERY serious issue and you should have it looked at immediately by a good mechanic. If either of these is the issue, the repair is expensive and time consuming, just so you know in advance. But if it is not addressed, it will result in the destruction of the lower half of your engine. There is no good way to predict when, either, but it is not likely to last more than a few hundred miles.
