Can't shift out of park what could be causing this
Your shift-lock solenoid is not working. The solenoid is controlled by your brake lamp circuits. The first thing to do is to check your brake lamps to see if they are working. If the brake lamps are working, the solenoid is most likely defective. If the brake lamps are not working, then you need to diagnose your brake lamp circuits to get your shifter working. Most likely cause would be the brake lamp switch or a short in the system that has caused the brake lamp fuse to blow.
Engine knocking on my Subaru legacy 2 litre twin
By your description it sounds like a rod or crank bearing has gone bad. This is a VERY serious issue and you should have it looked at immediately by a good mechanic. If either of these is the issue, the repair is expensive and time consuming, just so you know in advance. But if it is not addressed, it will result in the destruction of the lower half of your engine. There is no good way to predict when, either, but it is not likely to last more than a few hundred miles.
Do you have to change the water pump when changing
You don't have too, but not bad idea, the timing belt drives the water pump, if you just replace timing belt, and not water pump, water pump could go out and mess up the timing belt, now it has to be done all over again, timing belt, water pump and labor.
No heat, over heating
Not all new thermostats are actually working thermostats. It may require a second one. However,if the fan does not work it will be hard to tell.Is there a fan belt running to it?The goop that was added to it could actually plug up the the rad coils or rods and make it extremely hard to cool itself. It needs to be flushed.
