I have this problem with
you car is fitted with a "no fuel"system,so when you take your foot off "no fuel" goes to the engine untill it reaches 1200 revs.then it will allow fuel to flow to keep tickover/smoothness.(its computer controlled)you need to get your car onto the diagnostic computer,(skoda/seat/vw/audi)so you have the codes/items that need to be sorted. The tdi engine was one of the first engines that VW computerised and it is very reliable/powerful,compared to the peugeot/citroen engine.(briefly, the fault is not just a switch/cable),

IMPORTANT NOTE:
You must have the security anti-theft code for your Audi radio from the car manufacturer, or from an Audi dealer!
You can find the radio code at: http://www.radio-code.co.uk/
The sequence of Audi radio programming is:
1. Push simultaneous "SCAN" and "RDS" keys until on the screen will appear "1000" displayed.
2. Release keys. No more push on "SCAN" and "RDS" keys because otherwise number "1000" will be considered as first safe code attempt.
For example: we have the security code "5079". Then:
3. By the no.# 1 key you will set up the first safe code digit. Push 5 times on the no.# 1 button. The "5" number will be setted.
4. By the no.# 2 key you will set up the second safe code digit. Push 10 times on the no.# 2 button. The "0" number will be setted.
5. By the no.# 3 key you will set up the third safe code digit. Push 7 times on the no.# 3 button. The "7" number will be setted.
6. By the no.# 4 key you will set up the four-th safe code digit. Push 9 times on the no.# 4 button. The "9" number will be setted.
7. Then push again simultaneous "SCAN" and "RDS" keys for confirm this safe code. On the screen will be displayed "SAFE" notice. Release keys! For few seconds a radio frequence will be displayed.
The radio is now ready for use!

Are you saying that there is spark at no 1 but not on the other plugs. Check your distributor rotor to see if its not broken at the tightening base. When this happens the engine will usually only fire on the one plug that it is pointing at

Cannot engage third gear.
manual ,well providing you get 4th ok then its syncro problem ,so its a gearbox out and either a second hand box or repair the existing one with new parts ,check the linkage out first though as they can wear on the nylon bushes which would lose motion but if i had a drive i could tell you in seconds but as you appreciate its a lot more difficult from a description

It is a 1988 audi
The clicking and vibrating I can't comment on, but the antifreeze smell inside may indicate a leaking heater core. Is the inside of your windshield covered with a film that won't go away? is the carpet up front wet all the time? If so, a leaking heater core may well be the problem.

Front strutt bush very loose
If the bushings are worn, then it is best to replace them. If changing the other parts did not solve the problem, then have the bushings changed.
