I have volvo v40 1.8 gdi 2002 ,it cuts out it
agree, idle control valve is a stretch. I would check the EGR valve for proper operation and clean the hoses if they are dirty. If not that, maybe the MAP sensor is off. Does it cut out when you open the throttle or even when you just stop at the intersection?

After pushing my brake to start the car, a light
You're park brake may be faulty or if you have anit-lock brakes, there is a sensor next to the brakes that may be bad. It's simply letting you know it may need replaced or serviced.
If you have ABS, (anti-lock brakes), you're brakes will still work fine, however you will not have the anti-lock brake feature. If you slam on the brakes you brakes will lock up.
Consider taking the car to an auto parts dealer and consulting with a representative or a brake specialist such as Les Schwabb or such.
Please let me know if you need further assistance.

THE ENGIN MANAGMENT LIGHT IS FLASHING ALL THE TIME
It's always a good idea to have someone with a Volvo code reader take a look and let you know exactly what codes are causing the problem.
That being said, a flashing check engine light means there is a Misfire in one or more cylinders. From personal experience, I'd say you can start with checking the plug wires where they plug into the spark plugs, the plastic may be cracked and they may be arcing to the block. This will probably be the easiest problem to identify, the others will be a bit harder and should first be diagnosed by finding out which codes are stored in the on board computer.

Volvo v40 diesel engine When you shut the engine
Hi,
There will be a wire on the injector pump that closes the FUEL SHUT OFF VALVE. The wire may have broken or come disconnected.
You may have to ask someone to help find the injector pump.
Happy Trails.

Poor /no acceleration
THE GDI ENGINE SUFFERS FROM EXTREME "COKING" - DEPOSITS THAT STICK AROUND THE VALVES AND PREVENT PROPER OPERATION, RESULTING IN POWER LOSS. REPAIR CAN BE EXTENSIVE AND COSTLY ESPECIALY IF YOU START TO HEAR A RATTLE ON IDLE. THE FIRST STEP I WOULD SUGGEST IS, TRY USING FUEL ADDITIVES SUCH AS WURTH FUEL/GAS/VALVE TREATMENT THESE ADDITIVES ARE QUITE CAPABLE OF CLEARING OR CLEANING CONTAMINATED PARTS IN TIME.

My radio shows
You probably need to reprogram the security code for it. this should be written down in your owners manual. If not you can obtain it by contacting your local Volvo dealer and giving them your VIN number.
