If I remember right, the alternator connects through the instrument cluster, so you want to check connectors and solder joints in the back of the cluster and then your charging should be back to normal.
I WAS WANDERING WHAT OTHER RIMS FIT MY VOLVO 740
How many do you need? I have three Volvo rims that I took off my 88 Volvo. I had a flat tire and damaged one rim. I replaced all four rims with new generic ones, which was cheaper than buying one volvo rim. Let me know where you are located and see if we can work something out.

Tail lights not working
1) Open circuit on the tail light circuit board (common failure, the metal separates from the backing and must be bridged or replaced).
2) Faulty connection at the tail light in question (the multi-way connector could be dirty or corroded).
3) Kind of rare - the red canister-shaped bulb warning relay has a fault or its connectors are dirty. I have seen this happen where the headlights will not turn on due to this problem. Swapping the bulb-out indicator relay usually corrects this, though be sure to clean the connectors out and try it again before you condemn the unit.
4) Grounds in the rear have either crumbled or are dirty. These grounds are hard to locate under the trunk carpet. They are on either side of the rear of the car. Also - while on the subject of grounds - now would be an excellent time to clean the grounds in the engine bay. These are located behind each parking light on a stub of terminals bolted to the inner fenderwell towards the front of the car. You will see all black wires coming into these on either side. Lastly, check the ground wire for the EFI computer while you are under there. It's a brown wire bolted by a 10mm bolt on the fuel rail. Clean this one off thoroughly while you are there. Good luck!
