Coud be a seonoid in the transmission. Could be the transmission control module.could be many things.

Your request shows 2 days old. It would probably help to show which model car you have and if the upgrade climate control or the base system is on your car for other Experts to comment. The stiffness of the buttons is not adjustable. Some of the controls are vacuum powered and have mechanical parts which are suppose to move to route the vacuum to a proper place. The fancier Climate Control units have self-diagnosis which some knowledgeable Technician can test to ask the car what is wrong. The only thing you can try is to disconnect the negative battery terminal for at least 10 minutes and then reconnect and see if the A/C rebooted. This though will erase stored info for the Technician mentioned earlier. The light issue will not cause the controls to push hard. But the fancier Climate control uses lighted displays to show trouble codes. If the screen remains black usually the control panel needs replacement. There is nothing wrong with using a used part. Especially if the windows are still intact on the salvage car. You might want to educate yourself by finding Youtube videos for this repair.
