1988 Gl wagon with a 1.8l EFI broke timing belt
it could be that a sensor (if any) might be malfunctioning. However, make sure that the timing is correctly setup on the car because you do not want to spend unnecessary money when there is only the timing issue. Check all the sensors dealing with the combustion mechanism. That is the MAF sensor and the MAP sensor. These sensors control the air intake to the EFI those controlling the fuel intake as well. If the IC receives mix signal from the sensors it will not send the correct command to the peripherals( fuel pump and injectors) Very important that all works in harmony.
Dashboard lights are out, switch was not turned
Yes it could be a fuse. If you have not noticed, I bet your tail lights are not working either. On most vehicles as a safety device, the tail lights and dash lights are on the same circuit. So it could be a simple problem with the tail lights, such as both bulbs are out. The 1988 is getting a little old but still a good car. They started putting tail lights on the dash circuit way back before the 1950's. Good luck. Let me know if that does not help.
Have spark and fuel, new timing belts.no
run fault codes to check for cam/ crank position sensor problems . Have a compression test done as the finger is not a good testing instrument and if you did something wrong and the valves are bent the finger will not tell you that
I need to replace the starter on my 1988
It will be close to the gearbox bell housing, where it connects to the engine. If I remember correctly (it's been a while) it's on the left side of the engine.
HELP 86 GL-10 /getting hot
This can be a slipping belt, a worn out water pump, a damage fan or the worst of all a burnt cylinder head gasket. Turbos running at high pressures tend to blow the cylinder head gaskets. Also check the radiator.
1988 Subaru GL Wagon Cranks but won't start
Before you change ECM, You must make sure you have spark from plugs..If not pull the distributer it tends to shatter internally which the eye cannot tell unless opened properly.

How many miles on your subie? Is it fuel injected? I think Subes still had a few carbureted models even up to about 1988.Check the timing, and if it's injected have the fuel pressure checked for proper pressure. After it starts, does it run good? Might want to checlk your vacuum hoses for any leaks.Good luck.
