okay i have a 1998 Honda 450 foreman 4x4 foot shift that will shift up out of what i believe to be first gear but it wont shift down to neutral please help

First place I'd look, other than the obvious connector to the motor: look inside the rubber boot which houses the wire between the door jamb and the door itself. The one thats exposed when you open the door. Sometimes, with 20 years of opening and closing the door, a wire can become brittle, crack, and begin to fray. I've seen that a lot in trunk light wires and hideaway headlights in older Hondas. Its worth a look. Other than that maybe jump a ground wire to a bare metal spot on the door to see if there's a bad ground somewhere. Good Luck.
